Speak up, let your voice be heard. a mic is just a tool to get your message out. Stand up, be proud, let it flow. [Sandra] Microphones make things LOUD. Some things are okay loud, but most stuff oughta be a lot quieter. I wonder what they call a quietaphone. A muffler, i guess. I think there should be more mufflers than microphones in the world. Her voice rang out across the room as she projected into the microphone. The crowd sat quietly until it was over. Her heart rendering version of "I'd give my life for you" from Miss Saigon was heard across the whole room. It had her in tears by the time she had finished it. [Lily] a small object in which someone can speak into and is lead trhough speakers which make them louder so the aduince can hear. [Eva] so i accidentally typed about a microscope instead of a microphone, opps, i have a bunch of microphones and they make your voice louder so people can hear you. [rachael] and then the microphone snapped. No one expected it. It was just there, on the stage. Black as black as an ordinary microphone could be. When she was speaking on it, she didn't even grasp it tightly. Just a slight touch at the tip, and then it broke in the middle-- that wasn't even the part that she was holding. science uses microscopes to look at bugs and things its kinda cool to use one, my parents baught me one once for my birthday, we use them at school i think too in biology, microscopes can see tiny things bigger its tight [rachael] I'll scream into you, so open your electronic ears...and also I need one, mine is broken. [Tue] the first time i performed with my best friend sarah at a coffee shop, i was terrified. it was the first time i had ever had my own microphone. she had her guitar and we both sat on barstools. our friends all came and sipped coffee and listened to us sing our hearts out. [rhonda] one time i dropped a microphone. actually i dropped several in my past. having worked with music since the age in which I could walk. I handled at least 3 recoding instruments daily. I first started really appreciating music in the 5th grade when my dad made me start playing cello. i hated it. it was beautiful. ocello was the best thing that could've happened to me at that point in my life. it served it's purpose, but i had to move on. electric bass was next. then guitar. guitar has carried me so far as freshman year of college. i don't know what my life would be like had I not picked it up. I think it my have contributed to the preservation of my sanity at least somewhat. Microphones on the other hand have played a comparatively less meaningful role in my life. [ian] microphone singing music if only i had a good or at least better one.. I mean as good as a voice can be no one takes it seriously unless it's portrayed in the right way.. hence a good microphone... and i need one that makes sound as well as records it.. if you know what I mean.. yes I wish I had a better one.. of course I could get one to use in covert spy operations.. that could be fun.. although not all that thrifty [jane] i see a microphone over in the corner. I wonder what my friend uses said microphone for. I think she uses it in conjunction with her web cam to talk to random people. I wonder if this is healthy. Should she really be talking to random people on the internet? Maybe I should get her a better microphone that way she can talk clearer. Or maybe I should tell her to quit and get a life. [raphael] Microphones aren't easy things to hold, there is so much expectation in the possesion of a microphone. Unless youre six years old and the microphone is connected to a cassett player by a twirly cord and the only result of your speaking into that microphone is a sixty second recording of twinkle twinkle little star or little bunny foo foo. But in real life, when youve grown up a microphone is usually held at some defining moment. A wedding, a graduation, or even a drunken night in the bar that begins with a few too many margaritas and leads to a super sloppy rendition of some 80s song and your daughter. [Amanda] used by many people to speak their minds, to make music, to sing, to record evidence, to have fun, yet no one knows how it works. loud. She spat into the space infront of her mouth. The room was dim and smoky, and a small layer of filth covered the stage where her feet barely stopped moving. The microphone was drenched after the first 25 seconds. Her voice held no harmony, no style or grace. [Kris] microphone [vernah] the ampliphied voice screeched throgh the microphone stiging our ears. we couldn't believe what was being said. the president was dead. [teresa] He leaned forward to talk into what seemed to be a microphone, but at this point in what would become the worst acid trip session ever, it could have been anything. He started yelling. His nose was flaring and bursting with thick snot. [John K.] I want to know what it's like up there. I've always dreamed of what it would be like to be on the other side, for once. I stand below, sweaty, shirtless, screaming their lyrics and throwing my fists in the air with hundreds or even thousands of others... But I've never been able to see it from the stage. [Spencer] there once was a microphone that was used by gene kelly. it never forgot the way his lips moved with such grace and beauty. the way they seemed not to be talking to the crowd, but to the microphone itself. [katie] i see the microphone. i see it fall. out of the hands of the one i shot. he wanted to be the leading man, when really, he was a mediocre singer. She shall now sing. and sing hard. i will back he up with my mandolin, as always. her twang, so sweet. with billy on the drums, we cannot go wrong. [albert] mind [nicole] microphone is a instrument to talk into so other people can hear you [Eric] the microphone is the singers key to the rest of the world. without it, he would not be heard by the masses. it gives him power, authority, and command of the entire audience. no matter what he says into it, they will love him....always [Doug] i got the microphone and started singing as loud as i could. my voice is not that pleasant, so people started screaming louder than my singing. Some tomatoes were flying right to my face. But i didn't give up. I kept holding that microphone as if i had to prove that, yes, i can sing. It will make you loud. It will make funny high-pitched noises. It signifies performing, it makes performing easy, because no one will ignore you and there is no need to work to project your voice. It is a good thing to have around when you want yourself to be heard, and it will blow your mind. [erica] i wish i had a microphone attached to me. "why do you mock me like that if my voice doesn't sound that way??" perhaps the point of mockery is beyond your drunken understanding. i don't apologize for wanting to record your stupidity. i wish i could just put everything together, to pick me up when i'm feeling down. that's all you are good for: a cheap laugh. [eryn] I got two turn table and a microphone. I guess that's been written before. I don't really have much experience with microphones, but every experience I've had with one has been really fun. I love me some karaoke, but then again most people do. People are vain. They love everything about themselves including their voices. [Veronica] I don't much like microphones. I enjoy microphones, but sometimes, software like Ventrilo can be spammed with stupid people who don't know how to property configure microphones. mic. i walk up. i see the faces of all the critics. they are judging me before i have said a word. i pull the mic from the stand and say "how is everyone doing tonight" well apparently there was not enough booze running through the veins of these masochistic fellons for i received no response. [Lane] I was there with the microphone, worried about what I would say. The peopel were all looking at me in horror, knowing that the end of time was coming . . . and that it was my fault. I wanted to argue with them. T o tell them "no, no! It's not my fault!" But the thing growing out of my forehead told a different story. I couldn't argue with somethign like that. No one could. [ED] He stood oon the stage thinking 'my god, I'm actually here' and the sea of faces was like a beast with many eyes, all looking up at him. He stepped back for a moment, terrified of the power in all these eyss, that seemed to strip him bare, hunting for cracks, probing for who he was, to eat him alive. The guitarist slashed out the first riff, the drums began to kick. He stepped forward to the microphone, grasped it and, as his voice thundered out through the immense speakers to either side he and the beast became one. i sing into this, and its pretty tight i mean like, its my voice just spurting outta speakers and things. sometimes i just talk into it though, and i give lame long lectures about trite and boring subjects. occasionally, ill blow into it or pretend that the item is a part of the male genitalia, mostly i focus on the singing though. [jriz] She stood at the edge of the stage, waiting for her cue. Beads of sweat dripped from her forehead, her breath quivering slightly as her stomach churned nervously. The stage was dark and the curtain had yet to rise. Back stage she heard one of the stage hands whisper a "ready?" Just as the curtain began to rise. Ahead of her the crowd sat, dark and anonymous. [Kaye] The sound of the microphone blaring with the guitars and the drums reverberated within my head. I couldn't think anymore. The ringing just wouldn't go away. I have decided to never again do a three day tour with led zepplin on the front stage. an object you speak into, it records your voice or songs or amplifies your voice when speaking to an audience [jeanette] Is an amazing object that is so useful to every one and with out it it would be a sad sad world but sadly we have a sad sad world any ways. In the show "Spring Awakening," which has beautiful beautiful music, the characters, who are 19th century German schoolkids (teens), pull out microphones to sing the songs. Words like "stereo" reveal that the lyrics and songs are contemporized. So beautiful. [meme] that single word inspires as much fear as the real thing. [Frances] the microphone WAS BLEAK AND HEAVY, THOUGHTS FILLED MY MIND IF BEIN G AFRAID AND SCARED. WILL THEY LIKE ME OUT THERE? WILL THEY REALLY? I walked out and the ambiance was such a reality. between curtains of green moss my old mask comes to life and takes the form of a small genial person with autonomous thought. we shake hands and i ask where he has been and there is never a moment of awkwardness except when it comes to heritage. Pushing words over the huge lump in my throat, I introduce myself quietly. I'm not sure what I expected, as I skim over the bored faces in the crowd. Applause? At the sound of an introduction? I smile. This is going to be a long night. [Jade] toes of technology [Laura B.] singing and stages I have stage fright. I can't dance in front of people. I don't like celebrities or tv. I don't like my voice. I'm too shrill, especially when I'm upset. Mr. Microphone. Oh children's toys. I miss being little. [Isabelle] i become nervous at the sight of one. it startles me and makes me wonder if i will be speaking in front of a crowd. i read somewhere that a ridiculous amount of people would actually rather die than speak in front of a crowd. am i one of those people. i don't think so. i hope not at least. [jamie] She fell to her knees, the microphone rolling out of her hands and coming to a stop just before the edge of the stage. It was too much, she could no longer continue pretending. The audience looked on with unease, wondering what she was doing. Was it a part of her act? they wondered. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. The room was silent. [Carrie] Give it to her. She deserves it. Young rouge painted cheeks. Bright blue eye shadow. Fake nails. The type that's made of plastic and looks like a finger that's been chopped off when they lay strewn across the floor. Little breasts, soon to develop into a voluptuous mountain of lust, that will be hidden oh-so carefully by her mother. [SM] I hate microphones. They are so intimidating. Make you loud and obnoxious sounding. I wish that people could just be kind enough to be quiet so that they aren't even needed...or they meet in smaller venues or groups so that microphones wouldn't be needed at all. I [Teresa] michrophones have come a long way since their inception. the ones in cell phones seem to be inadequate and muffled and need more modifications so they make better quality ones. they are continuing to use some antiquated ideas and in this day age they need to be updated. [dee] so the word is still microphone. grease is also the word. the word that you heard. its got time. it's got motion. it's got meaning. grease is a time. it's a place. it's a notion.and grease is the way we are feeling. fuck. i'm bored. and i love musicals. [Gabriel] Microphones personify tthe wanting of someone to be heard. Myself, I prefer for my actions to speak for me. I hear many things about how the media are canted and loyal to those who would oppress us, which shows me that while you cannot hear a person's words, you can still feel their actions in your life. [Seth] sing, baby, sing!!! your voice is so pure that it touches each body, each heart, each soul. A new instrument to introduce to the world-- your voice singing into the microphone reverberating all around me. [michelle] im scared of the microphone. when i put my lips to the metal, i feel like what i say really matters. everyone will actually think about what goes into it, then judge it. [JULIAN] ... [Maria] As I stand here motionless, I don't know what to say. The audiance is waiting for my response but only a crack exits my throat. I am scared, waiting for them to let me leave the stage. [Debbie] check one two three. is this thing on? because its starting to feel like no one can hear me. like i'm trapped and the forecast isn't clearing in the near future. check one two three. this microphone only goes one way, there are no returns. [chelsea] Microphone? That seems like silliness. I mean, do you know how recently microphones were made? What did they do before that? The just had really good lungs and strong diaphragms. They yelled as loud as they could. Sometimes, technology makes things too easy, now we're too lazy to have strong diaphragms. [Steve] There I was, one man before a crowd, the only thing sharing my on-stage torment was a singe microphone. I stepped up to my brother in torture and began to speak words of undying truth and agony, words of life and death, salvation and damnation. Words that could save a nation, or bring it to its knees at the hands of its people. I finish and the crowd roars with the scream of a thousand lifes then...Darkness. I stood there terrified. I'd recited the words all night, all day, and this moment needed to count, I needed my words to be heard, validated, understood, accepted. I spoke every line perfectly, they stood and clapped. The MC gave me a hug. I never felt so proud of myself. [CarlaB] I am so quiet that, no one hears me [chrissy] He stood in front of the microphone. It stared back at him, waiting, inexorable. The sweat rolled down the back of his neck, scooting silently around that mole that he knows he should get checked out. "Uh. . " And that was all. The buzzer went off, the audience stood up, and everyone filed out. His hands stopped their shaking, and he let out a shaky sigh. [matt] LA do da hah dah dhdhdh. now stand up and tell me what's the dealio, jo--sephine. netter's mom goes to coolege. [ashley] I've always wanted a microphone. I had a Fisher Price recorder...I loved speaking into the microphone and then listening back to how different my voice sounded. Now...I feel uncomfortable in fron of one. [Lauren] i need a microphone so'z i can sing. sing at the top of my lungs, songs to the sky and that guy walking down the street with his long hair and rock star sunglasses. sing. whisper a song to a kind heart. a heart in need. i need a microphone to tell the world my woes and wish for sweet song on the breeze coming my way. talk into the microphone so that people can hear what you have to say... maybe you should stop the music and talk about the specials we have going on tonight, even though youre the dj. i hate 16 year old kids at house parties that emcee over the dj. who the hell hands them the microphone anyways? *stab stab stab* [nathan] As she stood there in front of all those people, she felt her knees shaking despite all of the jack daniel's she had consumed that night. She saw her friends in the corner of her eye edging her to go on. As she heard the music begin, she felt her voise shake, but before she knew it, she was rockin Aretha Franklin better than Aretha herself! I sing because I'm happy. [Trish] as i was walking up to the stage i saw it, small and black, on a long silver holster. i found my way on stage and picked it up, with no idea what to say i said what anyone would say "microphone." [Elijah] Step right up to the microphone , say what ya' need to say then shut up and sit down ...... [tim] Radio [Chris] I spoke loudly into the microphone. "can you hear me now?" Sure its cliche now that that freaking cell phone guy has been yammering on about it for years, but still a valid question. Then I realized that I was talking into a stick and standing the middle of a forest, and that my friends was the last time I touched mushrooms. Can you hear me now, Indeed... [M] start talking into it and the world won't hear you is it on is it broken find out by placing your hand over your mouth when you scream does the world hear you now are you on are you broken [Heff] I already did this. Do you like cookies? I love them. [Joyce] can you hear me no well let me turn on the microphone CAN YOU HEAR ME ok lets get this party started said the poor mucian [ben] i walked to the microphone and took with a shaking hand. in front of me was a sea of faces. I cleared my throat and a wave of expectant silence fell over the people as they turned to face me. [Jess] microphine is used by the badest mcs around its way to translate the thoughts of inner city urban culture to the minds that entrap their lives to live in poor housing strutures were drugs and guns run the neighborhoods. [Mike] The life of a musician, what can they do without it? Is it needed? You don't need to be heard to speak, life is life whether someone cares or not. Speak your mind and your heart, to the world, or to yourself with the power off. [Trebek] He grasped the microphone with clammy hands and felt his throat constrict. The lights above formed sweat beads across his forhead. His wool suit was too hot, too itchy. He could hear the people settling. It was time. I love it when he sings. He's amazing. He never sings, but he'll sing for me. When its all empty and the lights are down, he'll take the microphone to his lips. He doesn't sing. He pours out his heart. His words are more than words, but they can only rain on me. To anyone else they are lost lyrics, to me they are my soul. They are his soul. We are combined. I love it when he sings. [Leah] I stood there with the mic in my hands about to go on stage. Looking out at the audience I instantly became terrified. No time for fear. No time for fear. Stepping out, the audience began clapping. Dismally, but clapping. I sang. I sang that first song I wrote for her. The audience applauded afterwards, and that was it. this word is stupid. and quite frankly, it sucks. its not interesting. and its racist. because rarely does one see a white microphone. they are always black. once i saw a silver one, but thats like saying gray is black. which isnt true. but seriously, where did they get that name? you cannot communicate with people far away with it like a phone. it is not "micro" or small. it just makes loud and annoying people even louder and more annoying! [elise] speak, loud, global youth service day. I talked but the kids didn't hear what I had to say. Then the principle came. Experience is the only way to know what to say. I hope so some day communicate in way that my students can understand. There is hope in the world if I can share what I have learned with kids. There is hope because people shared with me when I was young. I find the microphone and i speak . the words echo off walls I cant see. somewhere i hear someone sobbing. who is it? [Geoff] The singer belted out a show tune to the delight of the audience. She began with selections from "gypsy" and ended with selectins from "Hairspray". She did an excellent job. The crowd begged for more. What else could she sing? She had went through all of her prepared material. Then it came to her, she'd sing "God Bless America". She could do that piece without accompaniment. So she began. She was met with dead silence. The audience was not buying it; she'd lost them. She ended and was greeted with polite applause. Dejected, she replaced the microphone on its stand and quietly left the stage.
