    [Bill]

  • a comma is a very frustrating thing. when does it come, should it stay? does it make sense. does it help give emphasis. commas have so much control. the dictate. the cause pause. they add suspense. Mrs. Wilson at Loretto Academy was comma-queen. she hated them and always regulated against necessary ones.

  • i love commas, commas are my favorite, they make it easier to write ridiculously long sentences with breaks, rests for readers, which i need sometimes because i get distracted, however, commas are not semi colons or periods, periods you can literally stop, commas you can't.

  • i use commas was too much. of course, they're all grammatically correct, but I use them way too much. What I use more than commas though, is the semi-colon; i adore those fuckers more than any other grammatical piece ever. I use them so much, I think, because I like to wrtie as I would speak. So, where I would pause naturally, I comma it up.

  • comma. period. punctuation. a difference between a pause and a 'full stop'. a break in thought, rather than an entirely new one. like the pause of 'taking a break' rather than 'breaking up', the pause of you and me, knowing we'll be back together again soon enough.

  • The comma goes places , I don't really care about this item and that's about it
I'm really bored. So the comma lets me use it, like there. It goes in certain places like to put it between pauses. i ALMOST wrote pawses haha. I can put a comma here, or here, or even over here. The comma is a fun word. Not really. IT fits in sentences when nothing else will fit. It's nto quite the end of the sentence but not soemthign esl.

  • My biggest fear is being in a comma.
No lie, this isn't just because that happens to be the word for the day.
I can't bare the thought of being asleep, or half aware of what is around you for so long but not being able to move.
Sometimes I wake up at night and I can hear everything around me, and feel everything, but I can't speak or move.
When I finally completely wake up I'm completely terrified, and even if it is in the middle of the night I refuse to go back to sleep.

  • It hits her like a tonne of bricks, the news that he died. Her lungs constrict, her gut wrenches painfully and she retches; her heart splinters. Then it grows in her, the darkness. A large circle of black. Perfectly formed in her mind’s eye, growing and staring her down. A full stop.

This is the end, she thinks, the end.

It would be many mornings later, as she gets on with her life, that she’ll realise the full stop was only a comma. Life goes on.

    [Vee]

  • this is a comma (,) it's sort of like a full, stop but not. I think i might use commas too much. it's used for punctuation, look another comma! i really do think i use commas too much.

  • a comma is something that you use to write with and it adds to puases to things you write about. their acutlally really hard to use thought most ppl dont know that because there are lots of rules and its really annoying i think i should get to choose when i want a pause in what im saying and when i dont, no one should tell me. see i just used one and i dont know if that followed the rules i just want one there.

    [Emily]

  • a space in between words

  • The comma stood there, right in between one thought and another, and he just couldn't produce a single clause to connect. And yet, he had left the sentence so open, so dangling, that he felt as if he had to finish the thought.

    [blue diamonds]

  • comma, not a period she said. leave space for something else to follow. you want just a pause there, a breath, that's all, and then continue. not a full stop, not a change of subject, just some time to catch your breath, to finish the thought, to follow through. continue. keep the rhythm don't interrupt yourself or you may never find that one thought again and you'll always wonder.

Thanks to Mind Your Language, I've laughed and laughed along with the foreign students and their hilarious antics.

  • I have often wondered how a comma must feel. Most people read right through it, paying no heed. It has to share its billing with the semicolon, where the semicolon gets more reverence. Most people don't even know how to use it.

  • Wait, I have comma AGAIN? Does the word not change every time you do this? That would be much more fun. I still believe that commas look like winks...I think people sometimes confuse commas for periods, honestly. There were SO MANY comma splices in the last paper I proofread. I tried to explain that commas indicate a pause, and that if you read the sentence and pause where the comma is and end up with a funny sounding sentence, chances are the comma doesn't need to be there.

    [aj]

  • a pause, a rest, a beat. unfinished.

    [EcoMeg]

  • commas are strange punctuation marks. they look like little winks. people often forget to use them, and this agitates me when i'm proofreading papers. some people don't even know what commas ARE, and that's just absurd. didn't your high school teacher teach you ANYTHING? i mean, really...

    [aj]

  • A comma? Really? I have to write about a comma? Interesting exercise this. A comma is something very useful in grammar. I was not expecting to write about a comma but this is actually kind of fun. A comma is one of those things that people forget to put in their sentences.

    [Rick]

  • comma...okay I already had this one. I guess I need to try again. Comma's are used quite frequenty in English class. I'm personally more of an exclamation point or question mark kind of person.

  • Coma, oh, comma. misread as "coma" because almost everyone i've met today was a babbling, foggy brained, disorganized zombie with 0 fashion points. And I NEED A SERVICE DOG??! To serve others, I guess. Ah well, a comma is a pause. Well deserved. Let's make better use of them. I'm home now & going to comma-tize myself. luv ya!

  • People use commas in a sentence to define a break,
But how could you possibly break
When sometimes you have so much to say?
And so little time to say it?
I know neither of us had that much time
To say everything that needed to be said
But I hope what we had was enough
    Comma or no comma, babe.

    -Always, ox.

    [Kate]

  • what we have is a comma, a simple piece of punctuation that is more often misused and abused than used correctly. We have the spinster's comma, the grocer's comma. None of this makes sense, but I'm going to throw in commas anyway. It's important to know that when you're punctuating something, a comma is as often wrong as it is right. You just have to know.

    [Robert]

  • i dont give a fuck about an oxford comma

    [Rhane Yarbrough]

  • I am an over comma user. I really like commas because they signify a break in thought for me. Like, right there...did you see that? Commas are super cool, but I must admit that I use them too much. I abuse them. I really need to stop. I really need to stop the madness, but I just love them so!

  • her English teacher stared at her intently. She had written the sentence on the board no less than 3 minutes ago, and the teacher still hadn't said a word. She proof-read her sentence over and over again, until she finally realized what was wrong. While the rest of the sentence was grammatically perfect, it was missing an important element of punctuation - a comma.

  • a comma is used when you need to take a breath during a peice a writing but if life was a story there would have to be a comma everytime i see this one girl she leaves me breathless, her smile and personailty make me smile even when i dont know it :)

    [David]

  • I use commas way more than I should. I use commas almost as much as I use periods. I like to have as few sentences as possible. I'll try not to use a comma write now. It's really hard. My sentences seem too choppy. Maybe that's why I like commas. They help the body flow.

    [Brit]

  • Comma comma comma. So many commas. Why do we have commas? No body knows. Or cares. I haven't used a single comma in this paragraph. They are useful. But they are annoying in english class when you have to figure out where to put them.

    [Keechie]

  • The comma is a nice punctuation. What I absolutely cannot stand, however, is ellipsis abuse. It always makes me feel as if the person I am talking to is hesitant with a pause...did I say something wrong? There, I used it. But anyway, commas are nice, innocent little tadpoles that swim around, separating things that shouldn't be together. Well played, comma.

    [ac]

  • pause, don't think, just pause, just, ehh hang off the edge, or lean for, ward and, see if your footing stepping heel finds a period, but not yet, until double m's the end.

  • In life, there are many stops. There are turns, twists, spins, ups and downs. But, sometimes, you have to wonder when does the sentence finish? When do you have a rest?. In the parentesis, or in the question sign? Believe it or not, it's in a comma the solution you need. A short rest, insignificant but necessary, is everything you need to look at your life again, and wonder why things are like this. Be it good or bad, there's always room for improvement, don't you think?

So, all you need is that. A comma.

  • again, i just did comma...from reading the other entries, a comma is like a smudge, almost an insignificant punctuation. its just like...there. it doesn't have the strength of a period, nor a semi colon, but can also act as a colon.

    [xoxoChicaFriend]

  • A comma is used in grammar to bring together two sentence fragments, making a full sentence. The two sentence fragments would not make sense as two sentences, but not as a run on sentence either. Putting in a comma helps the sentence make sense.

    [xoxoChicaFriend]

  • I am the comma queen. I like to use them more than I should. My husband often will edit my writing and add a semi-colon in place of my rampant comma usage. A second before I started this I thought it said coma. I would like to be in a sleep coma. It would be nice. I have used no commas here. There is hope for me yet!

  • The comma is a superfluous sort of punctuation. It is a distinctly human form of thought, the need to pause, to separate, for if any other creature could speak in the manner of a human they would do so in short, concise bursts. No need for commas in that context. Perhaps it is a testament to the leisurely lives we lead, that we have time to formulate sentences and thoughts so long they need to be broken down into smaller pieces.

  • i think it is very sad that the oxford comma is going out of style. i hate that when i use it in essays and papers it gets marked as incorrect punctuation.

  • Commas are so important. They can really make or break a sentence. One misplaced comma can completely change what you're saying. A comma in the right spot can make your piece flow so much better. Use commas!

  • At first I thought it said coma - Freudian slip of the mind? Comma, hmm, comma, what to write? I'm quite fond of the comma. The semi-colon's quite good too. Love the colon, but only when making lists - can't use it properly in normal sentences. But then what's normal?

  • The separator of thoughts, creator of pauses. The comma is something that creates fear in the heart of high school students everywhere! It may be hard to use, but the comma is actually your friend. It makes reading more fluid, and allows you to make sentences that aren't at a 4th grade level.

    [Jamielyn]

  • I don't want to write about this. A comma is used quite often in writing, or so I'd hope. I suppose most people neglect to use it as they've not passed basic English and writing classes! Well, maybe they have, but most people just neglect the poor thing.

    [Dazia]

  • Then you put this little doo-dad in there and it's where you have to stop to take a breath but you don't really stop at all because it's not exactly the end of the sentence or your thought- it's the stopping place in the middle of a run-on conversation.

"Oh. I thought that it was better to have more commas. Doesn't that show the reader how good you are at punctuation?" he replied.

    "No, Steve. No."

Without it I feel my pieces speed along far to quickly with no time for thinking or gathering of ones emotion. Who would have thought a period with a tail could prove to be as useful.
