The train rocked back and forth as she fished through her bag. That box was probably squished by now, but it was in there; she knew she’d packed it. She must have packed it. Oh what she wouldn’t give for a sandwich–

AH HA. There were those Nilla Wafers.

She pulled them out of the backpack and popped open the box, pulling out the shiny plastic bag. Now if she could just open them without waking her seatmate.

There had been one, once, but the anchor that had fastened his soul to this world had been swept away by the demons of betrayal and hopelessness. He had little time left, and in another time he would have grasped at this fleeting moments, begged them to stay as they tried to wing away through his fingers. But now he begged them to leave him. He couldn’t stand their shining brilliance anymore.

Running through the trees, trying to outrun the explosions and bullets that chased him through the forest, he suddenly wondered if a few well-intentioned choices had gotten him in over his head. Sometimes the best choice was not always what it seemed.

And this couldn’t be good for his health.

There was no way out. The enemy was just over the rise, and even in the depths of the hole he had found himself in, he could feel the tromp of their boots, the trembling of earth that accompanied the tanks. The oncoming assault was everywhere, and he had nowhere to go.

There were many things I wasn’t sure of that day, but my calling was not one of them. I felt it in my bones, that yearning for greatness, the desire for Something More. It sounds like something from a fairy tale, and maybe it is; maybe this is my fairy tale. But I fully expect that happy ending, for I am destined for something beyond myself. And it is rising like a furious tide.

Each one was laid carefully, lovingly, with care and with the expertise of a craftsman. Not just a worker; this was someone who loved his work, who took patience over cranking out inferior goo

Oh gosh this is so bad. I’m done.

There was something in the way she held herself that made him think she was hiding something. Now, it wasn’t the usual things, like drawing in on her own body, pulling her coat tightly around her; head down, eyes not meeting his. No– this was openness, a blatant lie. Something was going on that he didn’t know about, but she showed no fear. Yes, she challenged, there’s something you don’t know. And I’m not telling.

He had no idea it was coming. It was just a normal day, just going to work as usual, dreading having to deal with the politics and the menial tiny things that always got under his skin. But he opened the door, and suddenly there was no door– there was weightlessness, and a force threw his whole body against the cabinets behind him. His breath gone, he looked up– and his lab mates were laughing, standing ’round the air canon with infuriating grins.

There was something about that word, a finality that stood in direct contrast with what it meant. It was heavy, laden with grief and joy and this inexplicable weight that made him dread what he should have looked forward to. But how could the human mind comprehend eternity?

  • Courka commented on the post, withered 2 months, 2 weeks ago

She clutched it to her chest, the old withered, useless thing, and begged for them not to touch her again; not to hurt her again. Please– they had already taken her livelihood; please, please, would they spare her life?

The only response she heard was their laughter, and in it she heard that last resounding answer: NO.

It was unique, different; each game had its own identity, yes, but to look at the detail and the sense it made, all the candy trees and chocolate mud puddles… it was almost awe-inspiring. Unless, of course, you hated sweetness.

“I’m sorry, but there doesn’t appear to be anyone here by that name.”

The receptionist handed the package back, but he refused to take it.

“No no– that can’t be right. Look again. She has to be here. She said she’d be here.”

“I’m sorry, sir,” came the reply, “but there’s no one here–”

“I know. I heard you the first time.”

It was hard to read his face when it was this expressionless; when he forced all of his emotions somewhere deep inside, tucking them away in a corner of his heart where they couldn’t even see the light, much less breathe. It hurt her more than the anger, more than the sorrow; because she knew they were still there, even if he refused to acknowledge them. They were there, and he wouldn’t let her in.

  • Courka commented on the post, flames 2 months, 2 weeks ago

It was scary, how often things almost always burst into a blazing inferno when you were around two very temperamental fire masters. The presence of flame was a given anytime they were involved, but sticking them in the same house for more than a few days at a time was like sticking a couple of bugs in a jar, shaking it up, and watching them fight. Only the bugs wield flamethrowers and the jar made of paper.

It was a hard lesson to learn; not that the knowledge itself was difficult, but that the concept would take nearly a lifetime to master. Still, she tried to impart some sort of know-how to her student, pounding it in day in and day out. There had to be a better way than repetition, but if it existed she didn’t know what it was.

She poured over the runes, just to make sure they were correct. When Larien was certain, she stood up, laid her hands on the page (unnecessary but it made her feel better; as if the touch made her connection to the magic stronger), then spoke the words. Instantly the room dimmed, each candle flickering in protest before going out. Then it appeared, glowing faintly in the darkness.

  • Courka commented on the post, bleeding 2 months, 3 weeks ago

“Bleeding heart”– that’s what they called him, but he couldn’t reconcile it with the way that he acted. The way he moved. There was something predatory about his magic, about the way he did things. His accomplishments were great, yes, and it was for a good cause; but they didn’t always agree with his methods. The means was not always justified by the end.

He stared at her, eyes wide with surprise, anticipation, wonder and– yes, a little fear. She had dropped him like stone without even touching him, and Lee slumped against the wall. He could see the negative image around her, the darkness that stuck to her limbs and stood out starkly against Seph’s glowing radiant power.

  • Courka commented on the post, stalled 3 months ago

It was totally and completely BOGUS. I mean, who rented out a car that would get about 300 miles down the road only to stall out? Not run out of gas– and, thankfully, not burst into flames. (It could always be worse.) But weren’t there supposed to be checks against this sort of thing? What kind of vacation started like this?

    Bogus ones, that’s what.

The old ship was beaten, bruised, and had seen it’s share of storms: that much was certain. But the vessel had a certain charm, a hint of beauty, and he ran his hand carefully along the aged wood and fraying ropes. This was a queen of the sea; retired, maybe, but still regal and commanding in her way.
