Simplify your schedule, your work, your life. All the mental and physical clutter only builds stress upon stress, until it’s stacked and compacted like a ball of coal. But perhaps these are just tests, and with the fire of time you’ll be refined into a diamond.

When we make our mistakes, we cower, hide into ourselves. I wish I could go back and fix this. I could’ve done this differently, taken the right path when I approached the fork in the road. But we can’t fix the past, only take what we’ve learned and moved on.

You drop the pill in vinegar, and it dissolves into fizz. The bubbles hiss above the surface and pop. After the momentary disturbance, the liquid ripples into its point of impact, then stills. It’s as if nothing had ever happened.

She scoops up some dirt, rain saturated after the spring showers, and pours it into the planter. She pokes the soddy grains with her finger to make a hole, drops in a seed, and leaves it in the windowsill closest to the morning sun.

You stand at the edge of the cliff and look down. The wind tousles your hair, the sun beats the top of your scalp, and virtego rushes from your nose to your forehead. So high above ground, but is there any way but down to go from there?

Drive through the metro, caterpillar crawl through it, actually. Cars line up in the streets bumper-to-bumper, the exhaust spewing from their pipes smogging up the air and skies. So many people, so many souls, but would any one person be able to find you in a crowd?

We use anchors to hold us in place, keep us from drifting with the tides. But what if our anchors are chaining us to a place of stagnation? What if we need to move on, change, and grow, but we’re anchored down forever?

You look over the dashboard of your convertible Mustang. Long stretch of asphalt, pavement, highway. Where are you going? It’s comfortable to drive, keep moving, but without a destination you don’t know where to go, end up. Can you keep moving when you have no reason to stop?

Hide in the trenches, take cover from the gun and bomb fire. Explosions crack in your eardrums, blow out your hearing so you only hear the dull echoes of your brothers’ screams and the hollow howls of missiles launching. Watch out for their paths.

We’re punished when we do something wrong, a measure our disciplinarians use to teach us a lesson. Teach us right from wrong, not to make the same mistakes again. And yet I never learn. I can’t keep feeling for you so I pull away to punish myself, but I just want you more.

The ivy crawls around the hard iron bars of the gate. The garden’s version of a “Keep out” sign, because only those worthy and imaginative can enter. For the beauty isn’t physical or tangible. It’s what one beholds in their mind.

How do we make ourselves available to each other? We may have the time in our schedule, but we as humans have the capability to lie, make up excuses. Do we do this just to cover our hides because we know we can’t fulfill what the other party wants of us? It’s too hard to live up to expectations.

Nothing really is that, simple. You find a way to overthink things when they seem uncomplicated. Why was that test so easy that I finished it with 50 minutes to spare? I must’ve messed up one of those formulas, or skipped a whole section! We want things to be easy, but when they are we can’t believe it.

Soon is relative. Just as is any measurement of time. We promise, hey, we’ll hang out sometime soon. I’ll get to that outline for our project soon. But “soon” today isn’t the same as it is tomorrow. It gets put off more and more with each day. “Sooner or later” mean the same thing, really. The only way to prevent the “later” is if we fulfill our promises immediately. Ah, but do we have the time, or do we use “soon” as a device to save us from our failures?
