Was he fully grown yet? It was a hard question to answer. Physically, yes, he’d have to say he was. But the rest? Depended on who you asked.

He pulled the sheets tight around his body and settled into bed.
“I’m wating!” he called out.
Finally, in walked his father, tie slightly undone, a few books in his hands. Which one would he hear tonight on his way to his dreams? -
Martin wrote about the word used 2 years, 7 months ago
I never liked used things. Maybe it’s because I grew up in a refugee household, where almost everything we owned was from Goodwill. Or maybe it’s because I had so many brothers, so everything I had was a hand me down. I like things, shiny and new.

Martin wrote about the word trees 2 years, 8 months ago
She literally hugged trees. The bugs and bark and sap did nothing to stop her. She had taken something once at a party, loved it, continued to take it, and now…and now she hugged trees and her eyes looked ever surprised.

He always wanted to live in a loft. Made him feel real New Yorky.
“Come up to my loft,” he used to practice saying when still a poor, doritos and rice eating college student. -

They said it was forever. A simple ability to read graphs told him it might not be. They pretty much had a 50/50 chance as far as he could tell. But it was worth trying. More than worth it.

Martin wrote about the word seconds 2 years, 9 months ago
He had mere seconds to think of something to write. And the only damn thing he could think of was to write about the fact he couldn’t think of anything at all. The bar continued to move across the bottom of the screen. Times up.

There are certain words that you rarely see by themselves, you always associate with other words. Probable…cause. And of course, now I’m blanking on all the rest….

He couldn’t use it. Why didn’t people rinse it out better? The tupperware he brought to work smelled better after sitting at his cube unwashed for 3 hours than it did after he washed it in the break room.

Before there was the earth or the moon or the stars, there was only one. And that one, no matter what we may call it today, split into a million billion trillion little pieces.

Martin wrote about the word mission 2 years, 9 months ago
Everyone used to know him by his shoes. They always stood out, for their style, their flair, their obviously high cost. But now, wearing his last pair, worn until there was a permanent smell, fraying laces and worn down tread, he waited in line at the Union Gospel Mission. Hopefully there would be a bed [...]

Four walls with no doors. No cracks, no lights. Nothing but him and what was left of the air in that room. He realized there was no getting out, as his collar and the walls began to squeeze him.

Martin wrote about the word fences 2 years, 9 months ago
Like a child he climbed the old tree in his new yard and looked out across his neighborhood. Fence after fence, some needing replacement, some idyllic white picketed, some even chain linked. Divisions of land, divisions of man.

The wind up toy shot sparks from her mouth, simulating a fire breathing dragon. She had a horrible expression on her face, the look of murder.
I laughed like a hyena, my boyfriend not knowing where this well of hysterics was coming from. How could he? He hadn’t gone to Catholic school.

Martin wrote about the word maid 2 years, 9 months ago
It was an uncomfortable feeling, having someone pick up after him. He’d grown up in a family of 8, bursting out of a 3 bedroom home. He didn’t know what to do with such a luxury. “Uhm, yes, my laundry is in the corner. Thank you. Thank you.” He had made sure to hide his [...]

Martin wrote about the word half 2 years, 10 months ago
She was half-white, half Asian, and 100% not much of anything. She didn’t know where she belonged, but enjoyed the ability to move between worlds. She was a hyphen, hanging from the rope in between.

Martin wrote about the word complete 2 years, 10 months ago
She picked up the last piece, 1 of 10,000 pieces, and placed it where it needed to be. Stepping back, she admired her dedication. But now what? She took a breath, stepped forward and pulled out the piece she had just laid down. The sound of cardboard in the garbage disposal was music to her [...]

It’s difficult to say good-bye when you weren’t expecting to.

He was gone, and it was time to say good-bye. -

Martin wrote about the word vase 2 years, 10 months ago
She had to put something in it. It was so beautiful, glistening in the sunlight like that. She could go to the flower shop, but that would involve waiting for the 73 bus. No, she knew what she had to do. Grabbing a pair of scissors, she headed to her neighbor’s flower bed.
