after running across the carpet to grab
the phone before the caller on the other end

I nourish my body every morning
sitting in front of my computer
while entering sweepstakes
and looking at fashions that I’m way too old to wear
I wonder when I became like this
dull and predictable
I wonder what Hood Canal looks like today.
The sun is sort of shining, the breeze is dull –
will the water be placid or have the winds decided
to stay there and play with the waves?
The attendant brushed her hair and picked up a tube of lipstick left behind by another woman. She twisted the cherry red stick and spread it across her lips in a wide mouthed smile.
