dusk

Twilight and dirt, dirty desert and the moon just on the horizon big and swollen and yellow after twilight and dusk, dusk in the evening making everything hazy and crippling judgments. I kiss everybody then.

win

True love wins, winning things winning hearts winning everything we’re supposed to on TV in magazines and movies, true love is IT, true love is THE THING, that ONE THING that makes us win. If we have IT then we are IT and we win win win oh yes do we win.

deny

Denial. Not just a river in Egypt. You don’t want to admit. You don’t want to care, and you absolutely want no one to know about it.

carefully

Always be careful. You spend your whole life being careful, and yet, what we all crave is that one moment when we lose control, and are anything but careful.

track

Little hearts, backward, a trail of them pressed into the ground. I smell earth and feces, I walk along, attuned. I am not a little girl anymore, scared and alone. I am a tracker a hunter a warrior and I refuse to let getting lost scare me.

gym

Shiny floors sticking to my shoes… everything is waxy and hateful here. I’m no good at running and jumping yet. I’m just a little girl. I never played jump rope beforeIcan’tclimbaropeikeeptrippingovertheladdersknockingdownhurdlescantclimbcantruncantjump.

I’m not good enough.

They’ll laugh at me.

chrome

Tables and chairs at the 50′s diner. Fender Benders, in Glendora with my crazy crazy grandmother. She thought I was being Buddhist, but I really just like incense. A very Christian lady… crazy crazy grandmother. Whenever I see chrome I think of my reflection in the table legs after I wiped them down with a moist towelette. “To keep away germs,” she said.

optional

ABCD multiple choice, you always are supposed to pick C. It’s the most common answer, and you can usually fake your way through anything pretty well by picking C. It’s the space between the lines, between the rain, the space where you’re momentarily free from getting a shit ton of water dumped all over your head.

radio

On the radio we hear songs of sorrow, change the channel; we hear songs with thumping bass, change the channel; we hear folksy bluesy songs, songs with a twangy gee-tar, change the channel.

Turn the radio off.

Can you hear it? This is our moment.

collapse

Collapse: like a rag doll dropped on the floor in the middle of a thunderstorm because you’re frightened by the great and terrible sounds. Your daddy holds you close; you can smell his beard. The doll is left behind on the rough wood floor, soaking up rain from the leaky roof as you forget your fear and become a big girl.

growing

Leaves vines everywhere in my hair in my mind, growing growing filling up spaces filling up my soul in the pockets in the places meant for your hand to fit so delicately in mine, everything is growing, we’re growing, I’m letting myself drift upward into the sky, grasping at the handles of cars, letting go and searching for giants everywhere.

feathered

Thick rustling of tutus reverberated from the dressing room walls. Pearls draped and cheeks flushed. Feathered wires clung to shoulders of excited young girls as they peeked from behind the heavy stage curtain, smiling.

brick

High away on the top of the skyscraper, pulling at my toenails there sits a brick, porous. Pull pull pull. It scrapes the bottoms of my feet. The bluebirds dance around my head and a sudden flash of red knocks one to the ground.

delay

Creeping sanity, juggling juggling. This delay of my mind is irritating. I’ll miss the next train and then where will I be? The engineer needs to be quick, step light, move fast. Don’t delay.

burst

She looked at him, her face lit up, her eyes grew bright, her heart burst. When she saw the other girl go up to him, and kiss him. Her heart bursted again. In the bad way. She would never feel the same about some other person. She loved him, but he didnt love back.

orchid

My breath turns to frost in the autumn air… white clouds rise from my throat. Leaves crunch beneath my feet. In the window a fragile orchid trembles, and my heart aches with longing and the tension of individuality.
