I’d like to think I’ve created the reality I’m in. But then why did my heart get broken if only to be made whole again? You’d think I’d spare myself the pain.

fences
They say good fences make good neighbors, but they don’t do much for neighbor dogs. My dog and the dog next door get along fine when they meet nose to nose on the street, but when they’re on opposite sides of the fence, they want to kill each other.

miles
I don’t know how many miles I have logged on my current pair of running shoes—at least three miles a day for over 90 days, maybe more. The shoes don’t mind; it’s what they do. Luckily my feet can handle it too.

near
near me is this computer i’m typing on. but where does “near” end? how do we know when something stops being “near” and starts being “far”? hmm. it makes you think. near is like saying “close”.

It seems I’m always near the finish line, but never manage to cross it. Does the line keep moving forward? Or do I keep moving backwards? I guess I’ll have to just keep going towards it.

lens
looking through the lens of the magnifying glass, down to the words on the pages of the book they began to crawl. The words were crawling and then swirling and soon had morphed into an image.

the lenses of his glasses were thick and warped the image of his eyes stretching them to an uncanny size, so that she could see the tears welling up in the bottom of them from far across the room

bronze
He looked like a bronze god—all muscled and shiny from the sunscreen. His arms were pumped from climbing in the Valley for the past two weeks. I couldn’t believe he was mine.

tide
The tide appears to be going out, so now I can find all the things that have been hiding underwater. I scour the sand with my eyes looking for perfect shells and rocks shaped like hearts—occasionally I find a treasure.

bleach
I like to let the sun bleach my whites—no chlorine or other chemicals for me. There is nothing more relaxing than hanging a load of clothes on a line in the sun. There’s a zen-like quality to the precision involved in handling the clothespins as you connect one garment to the next.

waltz
To waltz with a person to step in unison to have fun. To show true feelings through physical motion. Amazing portrayal of emotion. Love

fallout
I’m still experiencing the fallout from a personal nuclear disaster that happened almost 6 weeks ago. The radiation is nearly killing me and everything around me is dead.

driven
Sometimes I think I’d be driven to drink by the things you put me through. But instead, I’m driven to cry, driven to exercise, driven to forget, driven to love you, driven to say goodbye.

strung
People used to say I was high-strung—a nice way of saying hyper enough to get on their nerves. I guess I’ve grown out of it now that I’ve passed the mid-century mark. It’s about time.

remark
Funny how one simple remark can color everything else in your relationship. “Financial Stability” was the one that did it for me, sending me down into a black hole that I can’t manage to climb out of no matter how hard I try.

suit
Do we suit each other? After 17 years I’d like to think so. With you I feel complete. Cant hat be a bad thing? Can it be a good thing? All I know is I am happy when you are here. I guess you suit me at least.

century
I am more than half a century old and counting up to 100. Will I make it? Odds and genetics say I have a good chance. But I know I must do certain things to make it a reality—and some of those things will be harder than I’d like. Is it worth it?

dolls
I still have many of my dolls from childhood. They’re in a box, ancient and falling apart. Heads are separated from bodies, eyes have fallen back into the shell as the rubber bands have dried and lost their pull. Little Women. Amish boy and girl. Creole woman with a basket on her head. Souvenirs of family vacations.

blocks
The red and green triangular blocks go over there. The blue rectangles there. The design is almost a mandala, but it’s not necessarily symmetric. It can be difficult to determine which blocks go where without a picture as a guide.

bongos
I knew an old woman who played the bongos. She was tiny, with long white hair that she wore loose. She dressed in a Bohemian manner and hung with artists and musicians. Her name was Mim. Everything about her was what I want to be when I grow up.

castaway
She knew she’d have to work hard if she wanted to continue being a castaway, rather than a fatality. She’s seen the Tom Hanks movie and thought she’d be able to survive, but where the hell was she going to find a volleyball?

propel
My husband drinks a sports drink called Propel. It supposedly replenishes the body with electrolytes, etc. that are used up during exercise. The version he drinks is sugar-free and has only 17 calories, so I wonder what kinds of chemicals he is also adding to his bloodstream. Can it really be good for him?

reflection
The pine trees made for an eerie reflection on the lake’s surface, like menacing giants, until they were shattered by the wake of a jet ski skipping across the mirror.

potato
She thought about having a potato for dinner, maybe with some chopped broccoli and mushrooms, a little cheese. But then she thought about what a potato isóthe dreaded carb that would immediately find its way to her thighs and take up residence for a very long time.

dress
It’s been so long since I’ve worn a dress. There just hasn’t been a need or desire for that matter. I work at home in jeans or comfy pants, and when I go out it is usually to places that are casual in nature, and a dress seems like it would be well—too dressy.

coaster
I guess I don’t get crazy if someone doesn’t use a coaster when they put a glass down on a wooden table, or chair arm…but I don’t understand why it’s such a foreign concept to some people. Glasses leave rings on wood. Coastersóor a magazine or piece of junk mailókeep that from happening. Why is this so hard?

favorite
The web is my favorite place in the world because it lets me be whoever I want and discover the world and free from the judgments of others.

crow
I remember a camping trip in Seguin, Texas, with a group I met through Utne Reader. The evening was a blast, with a round robin at the campfire aided by a passed bottle of Frangelico. I slept well, despite the pine-covered ground, but awoke to a deafening crow chorus with the rising sun

twig
I kind of pity twigs. They get stepped on all the time and no one cares. Don’t people ever realise that without twigs, there won’t be plants? And without plants, we’d be dead. So thank twigs. Without them, we’d be dead!

gallery
art gallery. a place where one can go to be alone and truly contemplate the hard work and actions of another human. it is a safe space where uncomfortable, unconventional things may some times take place, but it is also a space where we can learn from each other without ever speaking a single word.
