When I held his hand, it was warm. I was safe and secure. Never mind what the future would bring, I was okay for now. And yet, my problems still bothered me. Why did my biological mother hate me? Why was sister always so nasty? Was she jealous for-no. I can’t say what happened-and lastly, why did my adoptive parents feel the need to kick me out of the house?

beloved
The beloved cat purred contentedly as its owner gazed down at it. The cat was the only companion of its owner, who was am elderly resident of the small town of Pembrook. The woman was an old maid, as she liked to call herself, and if not for that cat would be completely alone.

backpack
“Back pack?” I stare incredulously at Hannah. “what the hell? How am I supposed to write about a backpack?” “Easy,” Hannah assures me, “Just think of this. You’re out, backpacking through Europe-” “Like I do that every day.” “-when suddenly, you meet this person….” And so my story began.

despair
My heart filled with despair. “I promise,” I whispered, silent tears streaming down my face, “I promise I’ll find you again. I’ll come, and I’ll buy you, and then you’ll come and live on my farm. And I’ll brush you and do your mane everyday.” I stepped back from my favourite horse, with our final goodbye still ringing in my ears as the trailer pulled her away, and I had to go in the opposite direction.

She offered the mint in her hand to her horse, Guinness. “Good boy,” Julie murmured, holding his mane and stepping on the fence to pull herself onto his back. “Good boy, Guinness.” Guinness picked up a slow, smooth walk.

The mint aroma drifted up and into her nostrils. Was this it? Was the mint tea safe to drink, or was her grandmother intent on poisoning her? Amelia lifted the cup with a trembling hand. “Something wrong dear?” Grandmother inqiured, hearing the saucer rattle. “I can’t drink this!” Amelia exclaimed, horrified, as she flung the cup across the room.
