major

The major in drama stared up at the stage, wishing she could stand there with the same confidence as her sister. Why, why was her sister, a girl who majored in visual arts, better at acting than her? Her parents always asked, “Why can’t you be more like your sister?” And now, she was starting to ask herself the same question.

mystery

Life is a funny thing. So full of little mysteries just waiting to be solved. They sit across from us and say, “Go on, then. Ask me something.” But we never ask, do we? We never ask.

smile

I remember her smile the most. The way her teeth sparkled, the way her lips spread so wide across her face. Such a simple thing and it lifted me up out of my feet so I could fly with her in the clouds.

fluorescent

I really love highlighters for some reason. Throughout all of middle school and highschool all of my notes for all of my classes were color co-ordinated thanks to my highlighters. They added color to everything I had to write about and when I would look back on them to study, things seemed slightly less dreary because there was color on the page and things didn’t seem so bad just for that reason.

wondered

Today it struck me so suddenly, even though it’s so obvious so everyone else: He’s a real person, he has a life and a family besides me. I’ve got to stop feeling like he’s my family or friend. I don’t know. I’m dumb. It’s funny, because it’s so easy to accept everyone else in my life as real people – but for him, I’m always left in wonder. It was strange for him to mention buying groceries!

suit

Sometimes I wish we still lived in the days when men wore suits and ties and actually cared about their appearance. Of course, there were a lot of issues during those times…racism, sexism, what have you. But everyone looked so classy back then. I wish we could bring back the style while leaving behind all the baggage that comes with it.

wrapped

I think one of the best things about winter is the cold. I mean yeah, sure, people will be like “oh, but that sucks! I hate feeling cold!” or whatever, but it’s nice, you know. The best feeling in the world is to curl up in front of the fire on a snowy day all wrapped up in a blanket and drinking hot cocoa. That’s the thing I look forward to every year.

collar

Brosus knew that popped collars were cool. So obviously if he wore TWO collared shirts and popped BOTH collars, he’d be doubly cool, right?

In Brosus’ name amen.

rocket

Man went to the moon in 1969. That’s, what, forty years ago? And yet we have made no progress since. Do we not have the drive? Or is it something else? How sad that we need to be goaded by the Soviets into making progress.

knot

She asked me what a garlic knot was, and in the spirit of keeping things honest, I told her I didn’t know. I had to look it up. It’s not that interesting.

wanted

The weirdest thing about trying to go underground is that you can’t really keep up with what’s happening, you have a small circle of trusted people. You can’t risk their identities. You’re wanted. That’s all you think about.

anxiety

Lately anxiety takes over more and more of my day. I try the old Buddhist trick, staying in the moment, not attaching to the outcome. Anxiety doesn’t know Buddha though, so it’s a constant battle.

collar

When she arrived with her shirt buttoned all the way to the collar, he knew it was not his night. Still, she was there, and that was not always a possibility.

it is evident that you don’t care, why should you, you get everything handed to you on a silver platter. Stop your crying, it’s making me sick, the evidence is clear you are spoiled rotten!

cards

“I don’t know if I’ll be able to work with this,” I said, desperately.

“Tough luck, buddy,” he spat at me. “You gotta play the cards you’re dealt.”

identity

For a long time I was unsure about my gender identity. I knew I didn’t feel very female, but I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to identify as a man because I still liked cute clothes and fashion and had girly tendencies. So I tried identifying as “genderqueer”, but even that didn’t fit. But now? Now I’ve realized that being into flamboyant clothing and fashion and doesn’t make me any less of a guy.

It just makes me a really, really FABULOUS guy.

certain

“I can’t be certain that this will help you,” he says very seriously, pushing a cup full of dark red liquid across the counter at me. “For all I know it could kill you.”

“I’ll lot my chances,” I say, before knocking back the drink.

I walked down the lane, in the middle of the night, when everything was cold and dark around me. I thought I heard a noise behind me, or maybe it was just my own head, whispering…

troops

I can hear them coming. I can hear them marching down the street, their heavy footsteps as steady as the beating drum.

“Go hide,” I whisper to the children.

Without a word, they obey. If only they knew.

trot

When most people think of the word “trot” they think of horses. Me? I think of a dignified, probably English gentlemen strutting down a sidewalk and swinging his cane around. Such is the way my mind works.

pregnant

She was small, frail, hands folded over her a slightly protruding stomach–she had only just begun to show. She approached me hesitantly, her head bowed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more defeated looking person.

“I’d like to get rid of it,” she whispered.

pie

Once, I got one of those pies-in-a-box that you just heat up and eat, no baking involved, right? I got one of those–and I started eating my slice, only to find that the inside was moldy as all hell. It was vile.

No wonder I don’t like pie so much anymore.

pool

I stood, poised, at the edge of the pool. I had never tried diving before; I was too afraid. I was afraid of hitting the water too hard and getting hurt. But I can’t live my life afraid of little things–everyone else can do it, why not me?

I dove.
