The ceremony was glorious. The prince had returned, but there were whispers in the street. The Carentian woman with him had caused the largest stir, sending the guards into apoplectic fits when the prince nearly knocked the captain unconscious when he laid hands on her.

The skies above her were a clear blue, the perfect weather for kite-flying. She unrolled some twine and, judging the length as enough, began running, holding tight to the grips. As the kite lifted into the sky, caught on winds that doubtless raised kites all around the world, the girl fell back into the past, where summers were full of laughter and pure sunlight.

He was the commander, the one who gave the orders about who would live and who would die, but he didn’t even have the balls to stand next to his men and face the bullets that were coming at them like flaming burning death on wings. But I won’t sit back; I’m going to stand next to them and save as many as I can in this ill-fated, foolhardy mission.

There was no way around it. His body was slowing down, the numerous wounds letting his life blood pour onto the pale sands beneath his feet. He would not walk away from this battle, but at least he would take as many of the evil bastards with him as he could. “I love you,” he whispered as he hefted his sword and charged to meet the coming onslaught.

“Once. It ripped the toupe right off my grandfather’s head. Caused an accident behind us. Haven’t done it since.”
