savage

The savage gallops through the rocky crevice at inhuman speed. His bare feet are callous to the rocky floor, and the only thing on his mind is the blood he smells somewhere up ahead.

lilies

A bed of lillies might be softer than a bed of roses. I don’t know because I’ve never tried. I’m not even much of a flower person; I couldn’t tell a lily from a lilac.

dozen

The man had a dozen fingers. Most of his acquaintances didn’t notice, even when they shook his hand, unless he pointed it out. Still, he was self-conscious; he couldn’t help but think about it as a deformity. The kids in grade school had not been kind to him. By the time he was middle aged, he was pretty thick skinned about a lot of things.

Fantastic Frying Frollicks! The baker carefully placed each fattening holey goodness in the fryer right before my very eyes. I’ll never forget the way they sizzled from the moment that the grease touched their outside.

A dozen bluebirds flew past the barn window. My eyes raced to follow them to the nearest tree, where the twelve little friends commenced in landing in perfect unison, each finding the just right amount of space for them to land.

apron

The stained apron the waitress was wearing reminded me of childhood. The way the mustard, ketchup and avocado mixed and mingled on what was otherwise a blank white palate reminded me of the fingerpainting I used to do in homeroom.

thorns

The thorns in my foot slow my gait. The underbrush is another one of my enemies-I can feel her breathing underfoot and I know I can’t trust even the ground I walk on.

trunk

The trunk is like the closet for my car. I stuff everything in it that I want to hide, that I don’t want my passengers to see, and the things that I’m too lazy to take up to my room and stuff in my closet.

champagne

perrier-jouet, moet, celebration, new years, bubbles, wine, mimosa, bottle, classy, fancy, pricey, good

stable

I stumble down the dark empty street. My drunken gait is anything but stable. The moon is blurred by a thin layer of clouds, and its unreliable light guides me home. It may be dim but its all that I have.

anywhere

If I could work anywhere I would live in a beach town on the Mediterranean coast. Every day, I would have a modest apartment and walk along the harbor to the sandy beach side. There is no way I would ever be tired of this.

president

The president is a symbol. He can’t save the world, but everyone can project their own frustrations on him and pretend he can fix or ruin their lives. Why anyone would want that job I could never imagine.

horses

Wild horses running in an open pasture. Nothing more free, nothing more natural. Their uninhibited nature intimidates me and lays bare the constraints that keep me in line.

stunning

She was stunning, Angular, rosy cheekbones, full blonde hair, and a smile that would make a homeless man feel proud of himself.

study

People who are smart without having to study astound me. Are they just good at hiding it and pretending they don’t need to study? Or does their mind collect information at a higher level, and process things quicker and more efficiently?

laughter

Laughter in the hallway bounces off the spotless linoleum. It stops and all is quiet.

rules

The rules keep me from questioning authority and, by extension, I can ignore the morality of my actions. Right and wrong are two distinctions I ignore. As long as I do as I am told I will be taken care of.

flare

A flare doesn’t last but an instant, but it’s momentarily brilliant. Pay no mind to the corporeal temporality.

shuffle

I hear the familiar scrape as my feet shuffle across the floor. I’ve been pacing, pacing, pacing for hours now, waiting for the verdict. Bail is set at $50,000. It seems unlikely I’ll be able to walk free anytime soon.

solitaire

My mom used to play solitaire, but she was lonely then.

hearts

Two hearts beating in unison. Their primal rush is a mighty thudding in the ears of a savage. His blood lust will soon be satisfied, and he will sleep soundly.

left

To the left of the bookshelf was the window. A venus fly trap sat on the windowsill, lonely, waiting for its next meal to land.

orchestra

An orchestra in my mind defeats the stillness of an empty room. I imagine the sound of the violins pressing against the mighty brass section and the tension in creates. It fills me with anticipation that will undoubtedly go unfulfilled by anything except boredom.

abstract

To see me in the abstract is to see me in two dimensions. To think you know me is to only see half of me, to have the audacity to believe me is to see too much of yourself in what I project.

icicle

Her eyes were icicles more violent than tricycles Ridden by demons that couldn’t stop screamin’ She told me to stop talking and keep walking So I did as I was told without feeling so bold

beginning

Back at the beginning, I couldn’t remember the rest. What I learned I quickly forgot, what I knew I quickly unlearned. Back at the start.

positively

I can never positively be sure about anything. Philosophy tells me not to trust my own senses, and so I can only be sure I can trust, nobody, nothing, at any time. Great, that’s reassuring.
