fire

there was a fire in the pit of his being. stoked slowly and painfully over the years. each taunt, each insult, each degradation fanned the coals and fed the embers until what smoldered began to jump and dance

doorknob

the doorknob was worn and chewed. at some point in their history together, the dog had learned to open the door and let himself out in the morning. he would grip the knob between his slobbering gums and, with a turn of his massive head, free himself from the confines of the room.

bandages

“holy shit,” he groaned as he removed the layers of bandages one by one. the damage was far more extensive than he had imagined. the walls of the tiny room seemed to be closing in on them as the stench of rotting flesh filled his nose and mouth. he swallowed the first of what would be nearly endless waves of vomit. the wounds were not fresh, the bandages filthy and the pained look of helplessness the face of the child’s mother let him know that the worst was yet to come.

overalls

there was one last pair of overalls left hanging by the stove after he had gone. she didn’t know when he would be back . not even when, but if. she padded over to the wood stove and threw in another log. the fire blazed to life as she set the tea kettle on the stove top and made her way over to the mirror.

harness

she slipped the harness over his head and around his ears, gently adjusting the bridle between his teeth. he nuzzled against her pocket looking for a treat and stamping his foot impatiently. “hold on boy,” she whispered against his cheek. “not long now.” “well damnit, hurry up” he grumbled “my wife will be home in half an hour!”

motion

once the plan was set in motion there was no turning back. she had considered her options carefully and realized she had none. it was this or death. death might have been a welcome guest at her table any other time but in this instance he came to the door with his companions pain and suffering. for them she had not prepared.

chills

wracked with chills and fever he crawled to the window to see the street below. the world was covered in a deep haze. or was it his eyes? he wouldn’t be certain. all he knew for certain was that this… whatever this was..was most likely fatal and that he was facing a quickly ticking clock

distributor

do you think we will be able to find a distributor for this load of crap? he asked with a smile that was only half mocking. are you serious she responded. have you looked at the internet lately? this is crap in exactly the same way japanese tentacle porn is crap. doesn’t matter what it is, someone will pay to watch it.

soups

the fog reminded her of the cream soups she enjoyed – before the accident- when soup was not the only food she was able to eat without searing pain. there had been bisques of lobster or shrimp. chowders thick with potatoes and clams or corn

seeds

sowing the seeds of change she reached into her pocket for another dime. a dime? since when do phones take dimes? dimes? since when was the last time you saw a pay phone? she chose to ignore that voice in the back of her head that sounded exactly like her mother and dropped the dime into the slot.

minute

it only took a minute. in that minute i saw it all disappear. “reality” melting away like so much neapolitan ice cream on a hot summer day. the colors blended into one and i was met by the soul of the world. in that minute i understood it all. saw the interconnectedness of all things. i felt peace

nest

where birds put their eggs. Birds build nests to house their young and construct them by gathering debris and trash from around their habitat. popular items for a nest include pine needles, hair, grass, stems, and leaves. Sometimes animals are referred to as nesting when they make themselves comfortable. Pregnant women are said to “nest” by making their house ready for a new baby, such as installing a nursery or baby-proofing. Nest is one letter different than next.

residue

That’s all that’s left inside, just a residue of feelings, thoughts, hopes and all those tattered dreams….I can’t scrape it all away, it will always be there, regardless of how much or how often I scrape at it.

blast

the noise from the blast was still reverberating in his ears when he awoke. well, not ears so much as ear. it would seem that something from the shop, a shard of window perhaps, or one of the bright red and white sale placards has done him the unkind service of shearing off the great clam shell of a left ear

medical

her medical records were sealed in the plain brown envelope. she carefully placed the envelope under a stack of old magazines on the top shelf of the unused closet

gallery

the work hung in the center of the gallery. hidden in plain sight. where else would one put something that obvious? that incriminating. that horrific.

curse

a blessing or a curse. each and every moment carries within the power of the double edged sword. there is an angel on your left shoulder and a devil on the right. from moment to moment they speak, using the same voice. do it… what have you got to lose? do it… what have you got to lose?

balloon

he had ballooned up to 480 pounds in the space of 2 short years. the stress had driven him to eat as though each meal were his last. a pound of bacon, 2 dozen eggs, the entire can of refrigerated biscuits. orange juice by the gallon.

shelter

shelter from the storm was all they needed. physically. emotionally. spiritually. but at this moment the most pressing need was physical. the rain fell in crushing torrents. the wind wiped it’s ice laden fingers across their open wounds. the landscape became more treacherous with every breath.

track

she tracked back through her mind to see if she could find the exact point where it all went wrong. there were the long nights of empty wine bottles, the all too blurry days of headaches and excuses. the heavy eyelids and dark glasses. then came the bruises. and the pain. liver failure is not a cup of tea

ants

the ants were crawling up the wall, one by one. each following the one before. “scent trails. that’s how they know where to go,” he whispered. “the first ants, the scouts, find the food and then leave a trail for the rest”. food. how odd. food. i wouldn’t immediately think to call the bloated, stinking mess slumped in the corner “food.” i rolled the word across my tongue and into my mind, trying to make the word match the image i had in my head. just 3 days ago this “food” had a name. i called it “dad.”

flirt

“we’re flirting with danger here,” he bellowed. this wasn’t the first time they had taken such a risk. the first time. it seemed ages ago now. the feat was simple enough. dash across the busy highway, touch the dividing wall and dash back. what could possibly go wrong? they were fortunate that nothing did. the adrenaline rush was astounding.

festival

the winter festival was in full swing when the gristly discovery was made. the fingers were splayed out in a a gesture that could have been called a wave. if they were attached to a hand. the eyes stared blankly into the distance, perhaps searching for the skull they once called home.

plans

plans are for fools! or so she thought. but how does one move through life with purpose and intention without planning? life without a plan, why it’s like… well, it’s like.. a unicorn without a harpsichord.

hinge

it all hinged on the next breath. too deep and it would all slip away. to shallow and they would all know the truth.

fences

people build fences to keep things in. more often, they build them to keep things out. “good fences make good neaighbors,” so the saying goes. what about good conversation? building community? seeing the other as the same as you and not a threat, someone you have to protect yourself and your things from. if good fences truly made good neighbors, my neighbor never would have threatened to shoot my son.

scarce

what you believe to be scarce is not. it is simply hidden from view. there is more than enough of the thing you need to carry you through your life. you need only look within , listen to the quiet confident voice that whispers to you that you have what you need. you are who you need to be.

poison

poison will not penetrate where there is no wound. sage advice she thought as she peeled back layers and layers of their years together. the poison bubbling beneath the surface. every betrayal, every slight, every lie, was just below the surface as she packed a lifetime of memories into cardboard boxes

repeat

lather rinse repeat. lather rinse repeat. the words played through her mind as she tried to remain calm while scrubbing the ever widening crimson stain from the shag carpet. lather rinse repeat. she hadn’t meant to hit him that hard, not really. the ashtray was handy. before she knew what she was doing it was in her hand. lather rinse repeat

elastic

I loved to play elastics with the Vietnamese kids at school. They were always making long colorful ropes out of elastic bands. The band was moved from different parts of the body and you had to jump over it.
