enemies

My enemies will knock me down. Revert my smile, back to a frown.Push and pull, at my inner most fears. Slash my heart, blood on sheers.

knock

Hitting a door with your hand. Seriously this is the act of hitting a door with your hand. If this word is followed by “ed up” it means you are pregnant. Knock is also a cool way of getting laid. although that doesn’t happen very often.

now

Now is what I think about all the time. It’s so immediate. I feel fear and self doubt and anger at Now. Why does Now have to be now? Can’t it be later? Can’t it never happen? Why does Now mean living?

From under the depths of darkness. A sad child peeks out. He cautiously looks around. The sun is so harsh. He can’t see. The light feels good. He does not belong here.

This is a place where you can get in, i mean into anything. It can be an entrance into a building or a person, social group or pot of food. You can see an entrance into anything. Entrances are good, just make sure you can see you way out again.

cathedral

Sanctuary. If one could reach the large building at the top of the hill, they could be safe from anything. It was the only place in the world that could guarantee that. Safety. A place to catch your breath when the world around you was falling apart.

function

In my grammar class, we talk a lot about form and function. Similarly, we have to work hard every day defining who we are and how we work in the context of our lives.

I went away and now I return. I have grown. I used to collect coke bottles and return them for a nickel apiece.

centerpiece

The holiday gathering was festive. The family was all home, all together. Like so many family dinners when the children were growing up, it was loud, raucous, and full of love.

obey

I get tired of those who say that if you know the rules of grammar, you can break them. Most people need to learn the rules first so that they can obey them.

I have my routine every morning; it makes me comfortable. This routine provides a certain stability to my day. I can live without the stability that this routine affords.

slouch

Stand up straight! I was tall and felt uncomfortable. Slouching allowed me to blend, slouching was comfortable because without it I felt awkward and exposed.

I don’t dream of anywhere because I’m happy in my somewhere. I don’t dream of anywhere because nowhere is still a place of possibility.

skyline

I am a city boy, born and bred, although the skyline in the west is different than that of eastern cities. The west is postsuburban, without the hubs and tall buildings so prevalent in the major midwestern and eastern cities; instead, the skyline is roofs of houses, power lines, and mountains.

rules

Rules structure the games we play and the work that we do. But rules always have gaps, for good or for ill. I read somewhere that the most creative thinking always occurs within the framework of the rules that limit our thinking.

She had a flair for the dramatic, a sense of timing that made her message more powerful. While all others around her expressed panic and uncertainty, the world slowed down, and the words grew larger, the meanings clear.

I grew up in a house that played cards. shuffle. Much of our social world revolved around pinochle, shanghai, cribbage. shuffle. You develop a sense of winning or losing, and also learned there was no room for compassion at the card table. shuffle.

solitaire

I play. I play. It is a guilty pleasure. It is a break from work. Not that I’m obsessive, but the games are a break and let my mind turn away from a task at hand. At least, that’s what I tell myself.

left

I’m really stuck on this word: left-handed, left-behind, left-overs, left-turn. I should have wrote yesterday, but instead left it for today.

abstract

Much of my thinking tends to the abstract, but the difficulty arises in making that thinking concrete. It’s not quite like a theory/practice split, but if we can’t apply something, then, for me, it loses most of its value, purpose, and impact.

I remember the wonder at my boys’ first icicle. We had just moved from Southern California to West Lafayette, Indiana and a freak snow storm in October introduced them to mittens and snow hats and boots and chattering teeth.

The most exciting time is the beginning. Anticipation makes all things brighter, all work more captivating, all dreams more vivid. My life is beginning today and will be beginning again tomorrow.
