crew
“You and your…” He paused and gave a suspicious gaze to the assorted teenagers, “crew, better get out of here. Like now.”

birth
Thade stepped back, breathing heavily, his body shuddering. On the table, his sister lay limp, but breathing once more. She rose, her face a bloody mess and as her face contorted into a grimace, the fresh, unclosed wounds gushed forth more. She sat, steadying herself with one arm as she gazed around the room.

heel
A smirk twitched at her lips, one hand angled on her hip as she looked down at the thug. “Oh, sorry. Did that not work out the way you’d planned?’ She asked smoothly, placing one stiletto heel on his temple, pressing him closer to the ground.

camp
I love camping. Both with my family, or at a summer camp where we get to have first kisses, eat smores and pretend we’re independant. I long for the days at summer camp. Boys, everlasting friendships that end the second you see your old friends again , but still matter so much.

fluorescent
Thade’s eyes ached as they tried deperately to adjust to the sad excuse for lighting provided by the fluorescents above them. Thorn, however, had no problems and quickly moved through the entryway and into the kitchen. The darkness was pierced by one scream then – silence.

clover
Clovers, to me, are associated with Ireland, and also to me, Ireland is a magical place. Clovers just sound like something mystical and whimsical to me–representing a little tiny piece of the world in which magic can exist. 4 leaf clovers are supposed to be lucky, but also a rarity. What that says about the magic thing, I don’t know, but I know that I haven’t thought about clovers this deeply until I did this thing.

deadbolt
Click…and I’m safe in my haven of books. The literature of ages swirl around me and I pray that history does not collapse, squishing me in my safehold – my hidden world.

Deadbolt is dead the bolt of disdain. Lost to all who once had use for it. Tossed into the tool box as if it never was. The door swings open never to be locked again. At least the door is no longer closed to anyone.

intersection
Where paths cross. Any paths. Of people, streets, lives and thoughts. When you intersect with someone or something it’s a meeting of souls and bodies. Any thing can be at an intersection.

styrofoam
Thade’s face lit up like a bomb, his smile threatening to split his face with sheer joy. After a long running start, the grown boy leapt, cannon ball style, into the giant pit of styrofoam peanuts. Best. Day. Ever.

foreign
I love Italy so much. It is probably my ultinmate place to live. I wish I could move there today. I miss it so very much. I lo e the lifestyle and the people. I feel so at home there– much more than here in Nebraska. I need to get back there and feel like me again.

Writing has become a foreign art to me. I don’t write as much as I’d like, and I have no one to critique my work. I’d like to get to a point where it’s less foreign, and more familiar.

gadget
Sitting on the bench in the early summer warmth, I watched the man on th bench across from me. He was oblivious to the glory of the day, the hilarity and sadness of the passers-by, and the fact that I wasn’t even attempting to disguise my gawking. Whatever the gadget was in his hand, it clearly owned him.

acoustic

The sounds of the strings being plucked bounced off the rafters and the walls. It was late and I was the only one watching him, listening to his complex story. In those moments, he was beautiful and I would forget about the moments outside of that time. I rubbed my shoulder and felt a bit of pain, a small reminder of what it was like when he wasn’t lost in his own rapture.

whiskey
I don’t drink alcohol. I don’t know what whiskey (or any other drink for that matter) tastes, smells, or looks like. And I’m happy this way. I don’t need or feel a desire to change it.

gasoline
gas is what is used in cars and airplanes. It comes from the ground and has to be refined to actually be used. Most houses – to my knowledge- use gas to be heated. I was watching tv and there was a commercial about how you can set up your bbq with your houses gas so that you never have to buy propane again.

hysterical
there’s a single laugh that floods the room. and it’s yours. something about the way your teeth fold under your lips spreads a smile across my face that’s more contagious than chain smoking on a summer day. drinking brandy on a fall afternoon. and sleeping naked in the depths of december. hysterically lovely. like an abstract painting that could never ever be remade. never recreated. you’re an original. a crack. and i won’t patch you up.

obsolete
I was just thinking the other day about how computers without the internet don’t get used a whole lot. And blind people don’t use them at all. Do they? I feel completely ignorant about the blind, maybe I should do some more research.

bookshelf
The third book on the second shelf of the bookshelf by my door is e.e. cummings’s Tulips & Chimneys. It’s my favorite book.

I love to read. Books can open up millions of different worlds and perspectives. Every single person could find a book they love, and there’s more every day. What better to hold books with than a bookshelf?

alumni
I call myself an alumna, but the truth is I never graduated. Does that count? Can I still call myself that? I feel that it’s misleading. That I’m just another college dropout.

determined
Thade lofted a brow as his twin scrambled up the building like a squirrel. The eight year old scaled the brick and edged her way over the rooftop, her eyes squarely on her prey. The bird, perched innocently on a weather vein, was completely oblivious to the eminent danger. The determined child poised for the final attack, her butt wiggling in the air like a cat.

strength
When my son was born, we were amazed by the quiet strength we could feel from him. As he’s grown, we’ve seen that strength grow with him, he is truly a force to be reckoned with.
