switching

I kept switching in between lives. One minute I was on the beach, the next I was on a hike in the woods. One minute I was with him, the next my sister. I needed to get a better grip on this teleporting ability I had discovered, because I had no idea how to control it.

racket

“What’s all the racket out there?” Mrs. Crabby, as we liked to call her, yelled out at us. “Nothing, we’re just playing,” I responded, doing my best to sound sweet and innocent. She did something along the lines of a grunt, and trudged back in her house. My friends and I looked at each other and snickered at her grouchy disposition.

quest

I can’t believe I agreed to this. We were trekking through the deepest woods I had ever seen, and I still wasn’t convinced that what we were looking for would be there, or even exist. I kept going though. Through the bugs, the heat, the blood sweat and tears. I kept going not because of my belief in the quest, but because of Jude’s. He was so confident in what we were doing, I found myself following him undoubtedly.

backspace

“Backspace? That’s it?” I asked blankly. “I feel like it should be more complicated than that.” “No, trust me, it’s just the backspace key, that’s it, that’s the code.” “That’s not a code, it’s an action.”

tasting

I was tasting a strawberry out of the garden. “Lovely,” I said, glancing over at my companion. I turned back to the berry and continued munching. My companion too was occupying himself with the garden, choosing instead to nibble on the lettuce. He hadn’t responded, which wasn’t surprising with his mouth full of lettuce. That, and he was a rabbit.

nominated

“I nominate you,” the boy said. I scrunched my nose at him. “I reject your nomination.” Then all the children started rallying for me to go. I was out numbered– I had no choice. I sighed, and despite much protesting, agreed to their game.

hearing

“I’m not hearing what you’re saying,” he said. “I think I’m making it pretty clear,” I responded with a glare. “What? No!” he said, raising his voice, “I actually can’t hear you! What is that noise?” Once I focused I heard it too. And once I heard it, it was indeed very distracting.

separate

“We’ll have to go our separate ways,” he told me. “What? No, that’s an incredibly bad idea,” I protested. “Don’t argue with me, there’s no time for that; you can’t worry about me, just worry about yourself and I’ll do the same, that way we both come out. Sometimes selfishness is necessary.” “You’re so wrong about that.”

alibi

I didn’t have one. How could I not have one? I’d never admit to be guilty, no more than I would plead innocent. The fact that I was missing an alibi messed with my head so badly that I couldn’t even think straight– what was I? Guilty? Or innocent? Even I didn’t know.

temper

I felt enraged. I couldn’t hurt though, not again, so I ran. I just left, running as fast as I could. Out the door, across the yard, down the road. I didn’t know where I was headed, and I didn’t care. She did it to me again and she didn’t understand. The last thing I wanted was to hurt her though. I couldn’t do that.

exquisite

She strolled down the road, holding her umbrella, and turned her head to the clouds. “Do you think it will rain?” she asked her companion. “I hope not– we are not in the proper fashion for rain,” the woman walking next to her replied. “What would the proper fashion be?” “Indoors.”
