lullaby

She used to sing lullabies to her child all the time. The baby in her arms would always fall asleep so quickly listening to her songs. She loved her voice and her child. Nothing should have ever separated them. But that was before the trolls. Before the destruction. Before the loneliness.

I immediately signed the contract for the lease for my house. The scary part was that a) I don’t know what a lease is and b) I don’t own a house.

I signed a paper. It was not just any paper, it was the contract for the lease of my house. I don’t even know what a lease is, I don’t even own a house. That was the scary part.

I signed my name at the bottom of the paper. It was a huge document — 53 pages to be exact — that I had just read. This was the commitment I was making to myself, to my country, to my people. It was no small job. The document was filled with warnings about how my life would probably be lots shorter, too.

airstream

The airstream was fast and it rushed past me, making a whooshing sound. A few seconds later, it happened again. The rest of the air was calm, except for that. “Hello?” I called out. “Is anyone there?” The air came again, softer now. It pulled me off the ground.

manhattan

Manhattan was booming. Everyone flocked there to shop, eat, or just walk around. It was a destination, a huge metropolis that embodied what everybody loved about America. We were leaving next week though. Moving on. We were going to Chicago, where the future was bright.

taboo

It was taboo. Everything about her actions. The ritual, the shop, the tattoos given out at night in secret. All of it, taboo. But there was something special about her actions. Something about her aura that made it seem almost acceptable. And she was old. The king would never kill someone who was old.

celestial

The stars are celestial beings. They are regal and proud, hanging in the night sky like gems on a chandelier. Each speck of light on the velvety black sky reminds me of just how small I am. Of just how big the universe is, and how inconsequential tomorrow will be.

loom

Dark thunderclouds loomed in the distance. Rain was coming, we could feel it in our bones. It would be a great storm, and the earth needed the moisture desperately. The crops were dry and the fields were drier. Rain was a blessing. Flashes of lighting could be seen.

soap

The soap suds overflowed in my hands, and I laughed. Laundry day usually wasn’t fun, but something about soap — real soap — made it all okay. Our grimy clothes would be clean for once, and the whites would be almost white and not mostly brown. Whoever had left the bars of soap by the river had no idea what a wonderful gift they had given.

beer

The beer sloshed out of the cup I was holding as I walked towards the car. Parties were stupid, all we ever did was get drunk and high. But that was the point, right? We just wanted to forget all about life, and that was the best way to do it. I sipped at my drink, making a face as it ran down my throat. I would stop someday.

stories

The stories he told were ones that had us awed, watching the flames dance across his face at night. They were stories of the world before the plague, stories were people were happy and were able to travel and see many beautiful things.

simplify

Simplify, simplify, simplify. That was all the proctors were trying to do. They didn’t know they were hurting us, really. They weren’t aware that taking away our talents left us as shells. It was just their job: simplify. Get rid of anything that would make things more difficult.

rating

The rating on the movie was top-notch, 5 star. That was why were going to see it, because it was good. Not because movies didn’t involve talking to each other. Not because we didn’t want to face each other and think about what happened. Not because we didn’t want to.

dissolve

The salts dissolves almost instantly in the acid, and a curl of smoke rose into the air. I looked at my professor, and he nodded his encouragement. He was a brilliant man whose talents with potions were held back only by his arthritic hands.

ensue

The fight that ensued was terrifying. They were yelling and screaming and throwing things at each other. My brother and I cowered underneath the dining room table, and I covered his mouth to keep him from whimpering. We didn’t want mom or dad to see us, especially when they were both drunk.

enemies

We were enemies. Our people never interacted, we did not trade, we did not tolerate the enemy’s ships — nothing. Marriage was out of the question, and negotiations had not taken place in hundreds of years. It was a wonder there was not a war yet. This boy was clearly from the enemy, but he was wounded in the woods…

clasp

I fumbled with the clasp on the necklace, and it fell to the floor. With a almost melodic tinkle, the glass pendant shattered. I bent down to pick it up, being careful not to cut my fingers on the tiny shards. There was something melted into the glass.

planter

“You’ll be a planter,” the officer explained to me. “That means you are in charge of giving the people their initial ideas, of planting the government’s wishes inside their heads. This is a vital job, and it is not given to many. Don’t mess it up!”

checkmate

“Checkmate!” I shouted at my chess partner, who grinned at me. “You’re finally going to win a match,” he laughed, moving his pieces in defeat. He had been teaching me for months and I could never beat him, but now I knew I could be competition.

magenta

Her magenta dress flowed like water over her skin as she walked slowly down the aisle. All the peoples’ eyes were upon her; she was their princess, their hope. She smiled at them all in turn, giving them as much strength as she could with her eyes. Today would not be easy.

burrow

I burrowed deeper into the covers. It had been a long day, and the winter air had chilled me to the bone. For hours I lie there, trying to go to sleep to no avail. Too many thoughts were running marathons in my head, and they wouldn’t go away until I faced them.

cliffs

The cliffs were high and rocky. We stepped into our harnesses and latched onto the rope that had carried so many people up this stretch before. Rock climbing was our passion, and this was the cliff that had always eluded us. Today, we could conquer it, once and for all.

metro

We took the metro downtown because that was the fastest. It was safe, and we knew where we were going. The problem was that, today, it wasn’t safe. Today there was a bad person on it who wanted to do bad things. We took the metro downtown but we didn’t know that we would die. We didn’t want to die.

creature

The creature was massive and disgusting. Saliva hung from its gaping jaws and its eyes were cloudy and full of mucus. As we entered the cave, its giant head swung toward us, and its ears seemed to prick up. It was definitely planning to eat us.

geometric

The geometric shapes of the glass fit together like a puzzle and rose into the sky. The building was massive, and made entirely of crystal. To see it was like being inside of a diamond, and light was refracted into billions of different shapes on the floor.

attracted

We were attracted to each other. There was nothing anyone could do about that, because they were emotions. The king could control who married who, but he had not yet figured out the cure for emotions. He would work harder, I think, knowing that his daughter was attracted to a convict, but that was beside the point.

anchor

“Let down the anchor!” the captain called. The crew scurried to obey his command, but one, the youngest, did not move from his position. “Why aren’t you moving, boy?” demanded the captain. “Well, sir, with all due respect…”

trench

The trench took us by surprise, it wasn’t on the map and we sure didn’t have the supplies to scale down it. But we were hunting, and the animal had gone this way. Unless it had wings or some sort of dark magic, there was no way it could’ve crossed the ditch.
