catapult
she was catapulted out of the cannon at ridiculously high speeds. at least that’s how she described her job during the npr interview i heard last week. her career in the circus had taken on new challenges, ones that could easily kill her with one bad move. silly girl. or, brave woman?

lullaby
she rocked him gently in her arms. she could feel his pulse weaken. what was that lullaby her aunt sang to her whenever she was too scared to close her eyes and surrender to sleep? more than anything, she wished this gentle song could bathe him in comfort as he lay dying in his hospice bed.

manhattan
i love manhattan. bright lights, big city. such a cliche. but, it’s so true. when i arrive to the city and exit the cab to take my first step onto NYC ground, i feel gloriously overwhelmed by the beating life of the city under my feet.

rocker
he was a rocker, if she’d ever pegged one before. his long hair and leather jacket with “the ramones” written across the back in silver glitter was the giveaway. she wanted him. bad. it’d been ages since she met someone her own age who obviously loved music the way she does. her mind raced for the perfect opening line. the moment was now.

wafer
she loves vanilla wafers! i’m so excited to bring her one. how nice of the lady across the street to wave me into her house to offer me sweets. even though i have been told many times not to talk to strangers, i went inside anyway.

shoulder
She rest her head into his shoulder and hug him strongly. They could have been like that either 60 seconds or a whole life. They had discovered how to stop the time.

taboo
the elders told us the small pond was taboo. they were convinced evil spirits had inhabited the water and caused death for the living creatures who called the pond home. but i knew better. something told me another living thing, a bacteria, killed off what was once there. but, i have not been to school yet. i only read it in my science books. can’t wait to learn the truth.

auburn
my hair is auburn, although i never specifically planned it that way. you might imagine from my statement that I plan the color of my hair rather than let the natural color be seen in public. it’s true. about twenty years ago, feeling a strong desire for personal design change after the appearance of one gray hair, i bought a box of hair color named “5N,” mostly because I liked the cut and color of the model on the box. Thus begun the next twenty years of sporting auburn-colored locks.

soap
the soap fell as she was lathering herself. self-consciously, she picked it up, knowing her new boyfriend was in the bathroom brushing his teeth and most definitely watching her through the clear shower curtain. she blushed. but, she enjoyed giving him a show.

simplify
it would help if you simplify your statement. i’m not sure what you mean. in fact, i often have trouble understanding the complex string of words that often spout out of your mouth. is that for the sake of seeming intelligent? or are you just trying to stump me?

ensue
in the ensuing paragraph you will find the crux of your assignment. it’s not easy, but it is important to your development as expert literary students. as i expect most of you will go on to become professors, do not skip this exercise!

enemies
we were enemies from the first day we met. i can’t say why we had such distaste for each other. we both went to the same college and graduated in the same class. maybe i got a bad taste in my mouth about her because she tried to pick up my boyfriend during the first sorority party. who does that?

planter
the planter sat just outside the front door. she had been meaning to change the pot for the fern, which seemed to be thriving with the recent attention she gave it, despite having received the plant from “him” and being tempted to let it wither and die. but she maturely decided it would be rude to hold the plant responsible for having been purchased by a no-good philandering jerk.

checkmate
checkmate. my opponent is five years old. where did he learn to play chess?!? when i was his age i was following my big brother everywhere he went, especially to the ball field. i couldn’t get enough of watching the big boys throw around the ball. i hoped that one day soon i would be invited to join them. but, chess? never crossed my mind until after the accident when there weren’t many places to go since my legs had stopped working.

café
she sat in the cafe waiting for him to show up. why did she put herself through this torment? he had managed to wiggle himself way deep into her skin. she couldn’t shake the hold he had on her. her passion for him made her weep and him chuckle in disbelief. she was the cutest girl he’d ever met. even so, no one had yet been able to curb his awful habit of being late for everything. she’d show him.

cliffs
the cliffs of dooneen were a Boston band i saw play in the clubs several times in my early twenties. the reason I saw them play often is probably because a good friend of mine managed them, not because they blew me away. although, in all honesty, i didn’t pay that much attention to their albums. too bad they weren’t able to sell records. it probably would have ensured the band’s longevity beyond the few years they stayed on the scene.

creature
she was the finest creature of beauty i had ever seen. her black coat shone in the moonlight. she walked with the grace of a princess, holding her head high at all moments, and caring not at all about her gawking onlookers. when i shook her bag of treats from the open doorway of the house, she came racing toward me. i win.

I dont know what mumbling means , god! this is frustrating, I don´t speak English.. and this are the longest 6 seconds of my life.

leverage
he has all the leverage. how will i get him to see what i have to bring to the table? everyone knows his reputation. his success with starting businesses is admirable and desireable. i am a newcomer but i have verve and passion. “speak up now!” i tell myself as he walks toward the door.

anchor
anchors away. that’s what he said whenever his ship left dock. well, at least, that’s what i am told by my mother who tells me stories about my dad all the time. i have never met him. he died at sea just before i was born.

welfare
for the welfare of the children, that’s why we have to stop fighting. how do you think our arguments impact them? have you considered this? you yell at me in front of them as though they are invisible. believe me. they care what you say and how you say it. are you okay with scarring them for life? i’m not.

trench
we were in the trenches, huddled together. the noise above was loud. the screaming was intolerable. how did i get here? i’m a mid-western boy who loves to hike and examine fauna in the woods. i am no killer. get me out of here!

bagel
i love bagels! eating them reminds me of sunday mornings when my dad and my cousin’s dad would visit newman’s bakery to buy bagels, cream cheese with lox and half moons for the kids and our mothers. i miss those days. they were precious to me, as are bagels.

fabricated
she fabricated a story so they would accept her into their club. she had never assembled a model dinosaur before, but how would they know? to her, it involved nothing more than connecting the pieces listed in the instruction book. there *is* an instruction book, isn’t there?!?

bronze
an element, it’s not the best one, because for some reason silver and gold beat it. I don’t understand why, because Bronze is just as beautiful. I think it’s because the money matters. But it shouldn’t, it should just be the usefull ness. I think, therefore, that Bronze should be first place, because, what can you use gold for? Happiness?

tornado
the tornado hit hard. we were in the basement, watching with fear at her mother becoming a different person before our eyes. she had D.I.D. syndrome and was assuming her child alter. the child was five years old, but the woman whose body she inhabited was 40. witnessing that scared me more than the natural disaster happening above us.

listening
“i am listening!” she felt scared, which is why she looked away when he spoke to her. he could be cruel when criticizing her for something she did that did not appeal to him. why did she stay with him? she was whipped.

winged
the white winged dove is such an overused concept. it makes me think of fleetwood mac and sappy poems. if i were winged i would make magic happen. i wouldn’t talk about doves or other uninteresting birds.

beware
beware of the singing tulips. when they appear this means doom is pending. the tulips can only sing in spring, obviously. however, if you see them bloom one moment after midnight on the last day of spring, beware one thousand times more than before.
