The elevator doors glide open. I press a button and we–the elevator and I–swoosh quietly up to the fifth floor. I scan my identification tag on the timekeeping machine, return to the elevator, and swoosh up to the eleventh floor. I scan my tag twice more, at two separate doors, to enter the office. This sounds like science fiction but I promise you: it is 2011 and this is my day-to-day life.

The rocking chair used to belong to my grandmother. It was wooden and straight-backed and squeaked loudly back on its rockers. One of the arms was awry. It wasn’t at all comfortable. But it lent itself to comfort.

I love laying in bed on cold days. I always have about 3 blankets on my bed and I’m just so warm. I love sticking my head out from underneath the covers, that amazing feeling you get when the cold hits your face, but the warmth under your blankets pushes it away. That’s comfort to me. Those precious moments.

My bank account reads close to zero these days. I’m not entirely sure how it got that way. I work my ass off every single day, rarely spending a dime of my money. I hate my bank account. There are hundreds of “extra” fees these days. 20 bucks a year for maintenance? Give me a break.
