attendant

The attendant response is perfunctory. “Why ask why, when you can ask why not?” How does this matter to me, she thought bemusedly. Why should I care what a guy with a towel on his arm says, anyway, and hey, what’s a guy doing in the ladies’ room, anyway?

splash

the water is on my body…i start sinking. boom. i’m drowning, just like that. it all started with just a simple splash in the ocean. i’m choking; gasping for air, no one can hear me. i’m under the water. gone.

pastel

Upon seeing the pastel palate of condos lining the riverside I wondered what the next trend would be. It reminded me of stale saltine crackers and mint candy at my grandmothers; tacky and comforting.

belief

Is for the needy and insecure. Belief seems to be one of the first steps to hatred and close-mindedness.

swing

Don’t let go. Seems intuitive. Is it? Is that what we want? To not jump off?

sweat

I hate sweating. I do it when I am nervous, when I work out, when it is too hot….all the time. It is not attractive, and I highly doubt people like the feeling of shaking hands with someone who has been sweating, but it happens just the same. I guess everyone does it, but why does it have to be so unattractive and gross?

weave

There’s a story about a Greek goddess who out of anger transformed a woman and all of her descendants into spiders- the very first spiders on earth. The goddess was upset because the woman, Areachne, was rumored to be a better weaver than the goddess, who was the goddess of weaving (among other things). So the goddess held a competition to determine who was better, and when Areachne won, she took her revenge. Therefore, spies only exist because of a goddesses pride and jealousy.

lantern

Forty years had passed since the cabin had seen guests; so when the family arrived they weren’t surprised of the shambles that remained. upon inspection there were little as far as equipment and furnishings. a lantern still hung above the wash bin, glass cracked, and some cutlery was strewn across the butcher block.

generator

You have to start somewhere, and a generator does that for you. It gives the spark to the mind or perhaps your car engine. It makes things go. It revs up and let’s you explore further than ever.

popcorn

My favorite way to make popcorn is on the stove. I think that other people do not realize the importance of this method. It takes the popcorn from a mysterious experiment in a bag to something right before your eyes. It makes popcorn more than food.

accordion

What a funny word accordion. The first thing I tend to think of is a nerdy person playing it on a stage. Long curly hair and doing strange polka parodies.

The German came around with his accordion . I wish he wouldn’t, but there was something about this that soothed my mother.

“I used to play this when I was a little girl,” she said softly. Her eyes teared up.

“What the tune?”

“No, the accordion. When your great grandfather died, I swore I would never play it again. And I haven’t.”

bench

What is a bench? Is it a park bench where all the lovers sit to neck and the birds come to poop? Is it the bench near a lake where people throw food to the ducks? Is it a bench that one would sit in on church? Is that what it is? Or is it something more? Can people just name a bench whatever they like? Is a bench not all what we agree it is? Can we change the meaning of a word if enough people agree that something else is a bench and not the bench before? Is this not all some philosophy? Linguistics? An apple? An orange? Are these not all things that we can change the meaning over by allowing the people to change the meaning?

thunder

Thunder strikes in the middle of a good dream. Dam, you’re rude. Let me just sleep a little bit longer, don’t remind me that my dream haven’t come true just yet. Quiet down, this is a good part.

scar

Invisible remains where she used to be. An existence of non-existence in empty space, quantum-linked to the dirt hole where the earth tore open and healed shut, swallowing up all my reasons.

left

Where are my keys? They must be somewhere with my wallet. I can’t find my phone–it might be lost, but I could have left it in the car. Maybe my wallet is in someone else’s purse again?

autumn

A time for the kings to take a bow.

A time for Nature to showcase her wealth, when the lush fornication of summer gives way to the sweet fruits of labor.

The trees bleed red, gold and brown and gently, ever so gently lay their crowns onto the ground.

All wealth and treasure gleaned from barren branches.

His life was coming to a close. He knew it, just like he knew that every chapter had and end and every season had a finish. He was in his autumn years and was just waiting for winter.

alarmist

She didn’t want to panic with every step of her day to day routines but that was her habit. She was an alarmist and she couldn’t help it…but then again people needed her to be that way. Otherwise the disaster would not have been averted. She saved the day with her personal flaw and for that she was thankful.

downpour

sheets and sheet of rain come pouring out of the sky. every drop hits the ground, makes a splash, dissipates. where are they all going? these little, glittering orbs.

conviction

She couldn’t believe what she was hearing? An X-acto knife? Could the woman have been her sister? Her Aunt Tabitha? Now she was being convicted and there was no telling what she would have done with the fetus she cut out of the other woman’s belly. It was the grossest thing she’d ever known.

iron

Flat ironing her hair with a plancha. I can remember looking up to her, even when she did ridiculous things like that. She was pretty and older and I wanted to be just like her. Then we grew up and pretty only lasted her so long. Once you realize there is more than just being pretty, it’s too late to develop anything else… like a personality. I wonder if she still uses that plancha.

morality

Wow… I just thought of you. Don’t flatter yourself, you’re not that important. You’re one thing to me and another to the next. You have no real say in what I should do but that doesn’t stop you, does it? You keep returning with new ways to say the same things, but guess what? I haven’t changed, I’m as moral and immoral since the last time you saw me and I am just as happy. No, happier.

suppose

Suppose we get this right and we both can stop looking. Suppose there is such a thing as the one and you are it. If so, lets make everyone jealous. Lets be as happy as the couples in the movies and let’s live out the expression of growing old together. Suppose that love is true, but if it’s not we’ll just call our love something else.

dense

It was the only word to describe him. Dense.

So completely unaware of what was going on around him. Dense.

So ignorant of all of the dangers life held. Dense.

He was pretty kind, though.

playground

I remember the cliques that existed in the playground. We made the little house on the playground our clique’s “headquarters.” We used to stuff ourselves into it to talk about “important” things. There is nothing important to talk about in 3rd grade lol
