force
The explosive force knocked me forward onto my face. It heated my backside to the point I thought I caught on fire. I trusted a real fire would hurt more and took to cover my head from raining debris and gritted my teeth. A large chunk of building clanged right by my head and sent me scrambling for the nearest tree. Hopefully it would provide better cover.

silk
A voice like silk. That’s your first warning. The tone and enforced charisma are hard to miss. I didn’t miss it. Her voice said trust me, I like you. Unless you know about the silk. The silk says, trust me, so I can manipulate you again. I refused to fall for it.

poison
Movement from the corner of my eye grabbed my attention, but I tried not to stare directly. Her elegant hand poised sure and steady over his goblet as the table visited merrily with one another. Only I saw her tap the poison from her amber ring, a fine powder snowing into his brew. Either that, or everyone else wanted him dead as well.

cigarette
The foggy grey snake twisted upward from her cigarette just before she tapped it light and careless into the sidewalk. The ashes flitted downward before catching up on a breeze and into my dogs eyes with a yelp.

domestic
The pots and pans lay scattered around the dingy kitchen. He handed her a sopping towel, the water cold as it clung to her outstretched hand. She took in the sight as he walked wordlessly away. When she offered to help, her mind was definitely on something less…domestic.

shape
The globe of light wobbled between her palms, losing shape. With a puffing sigh she released the magic and watched it explode in a tiny waterfall of radiant sparkles. Her frustration pinched for a more satisfying explosion, but she shook her head and pushed off the floor.

figure
She watched the water drip, slowly down the tree branches outside her window. A simple thing, the rain. Simple, yet important. Such tiny things cumulating to give life…someday she’ll figure it out.

heels
She ripped the heels off and flung them across the room just before sinking onto the couch in a messy heap. Her tight curls reached in many directions and shoving a shaky hand through them only made it worse. So many levels of wrong, where to begin?

wand
The wand rested comfortably in her hand. Perfect. Subtle, but powerful vibrations hummed with overlapping whispers of promise. The promise of power. The promise of precision. She only hoped it wasn’t male.

obsessed
The spot on her dress nagged, demanding attention. She picked at it. Frowning, she rubbed at it. Finally she frayed the threads in her focus to tear it off. The more she worked at it, the more frustration sunk in. Finally, she found herself clutching the skirt in both hands and sobbing hysterically at its persistence, it’s finality, listening to the threads break in satisfying but horrifying succession.

scarves
The scarves slipped from her stilled fingers, catching in the wind to dance down the sidewalk. She hardly gave notice, still staring at the spectacle in front of her. Her mind scrambled for an explanation, any explanation. Rational thought flew away with those scarves, pummeled easily by a city bus far behind her.

statement
Her clothes made a statement alright. They said, “I’m not altogther sane and you’ll be embarrassed to sit by me.” I thought I should maybe let her know some statements are best left in her grandmother’s attic.

final
There it sparkled, on the dais just across the domed, stone chamber. The light was dim, but just enough to catch an eyeful of the final crystalline insect. Once she had this, everything would be perfect and her real plans could be set into motion.

specific
Be specific. That was her motto. Or, she said it to me so many times I would swear it was. No one could ever be specific enough for her. She had to have every tiny, insignificant little thing laid out for her and even then that wasn’t enough. Sometimes, many times, she needed the details surrounding each individual detail, like one of those endless mirror reflections in a funhouse.

basic
At its basic, life is simple, even enjoyable. However, humans, are not simple, we are complicated. And that’s the reason this whole mess started. What mess you ask? Well…it’s complicated, but then, you probably already knew that by now.

tables
The clattering of dishware bounced off the walls and made the tables sound busier than they really were. Not that they weren’t busy. Rachel was barely given time to think as she went from table to table in just her small section of the restaurant. Her feet cried for the end, but her brain pushed her on for the measly paycheck that awaited her.

bench
She sat on the bench watching the cherry petals fall like soft pink tears. She sighed, slumped forward and blew at one that strayed close to her face. Why was she here?

phrase
She knew just how to turn a phrase. But he was on to her. He knew the truth to this one, and no matter how she tried to pretty it up, nothing would change. However, he had to give her credit for making the worst of situations seem like a morning walk on a sunny, flower-filled day. That’s talent.

success
He wasn’t yet ready to count it a success. The key turned and the engine purred, but the cantankerous machine sputtered after. Sure enough, the engine faltered and died.

notice
The notice taunted her, waggling its corners in the sharp wind. Natalie swore and crumpled it’s ill-behaved edges as she shoved it hard into her coat pocket. Close to tears she nearly slammed herself into her chair and surveyed the ruins directly in front of her.

route
The usual route home was not so usual this morning. She stared, hardly believing her eyes. Before the streets greeted her with busy people on busy errands. Today it was as if the entire city conspired to dress crazy without giving her the memo. It was a veritable Skittles meets circus explosion.

tarnished
He rubbed at the tarnished edge of it, a slight frown marring his face. She had this tucked away all along? Why this? He ran his thumb along the inscription. It didn’t make any sense. Not that he couldn’t read the inscription…but what was she doing with it?

left
There’s no one left. For as far as the eye can see, winds tear through the desolate city streets, stirring papers. It is the only sign that time is not standing still.

motel
The neon light flickered with a garish buzz in the semi-reflective pool of dark liquid. He stared, his breath tangled with frozen thought, all refusing to divulge the meaning of the scene before him.

divide
The grey stone crumbled and she reached out too late. The chasm bridge crumbled between them and fell to the deathly height below. The distant, echoed crashes resounded between them as she looked away from the falling stone and up, into his eyes across the empty space between them.

pouch
Tucked safely away, I barely thought about it as I walked. The pouch was securely attached. I would know if anyone tried to take it from me. A gentle tug as someone bumped into me and it was gone, along with the thief that took it.

den
He sighed with relief as he backed up through his door and into the den. Time to relax. He kicked the door shut with one foot only to be met with chaos. “No!” His breath came strangled and he dropped his armful of books with such a loud and sudden ruckus that it made him jump to attention. “No…” Awake, he lept over the books in a stumbling rush across the mess to a potted plant, praying they didn’t find it.

upstairs
The light shone with a play of shadows from the tiny sliver under the door. What was she doing up there to create such a soundless dance of black and white? I crept slowly up for a peek, my heart forgetting to beat when one of the stairs shrieked under foot.

tilt
I saw her tilt it and I knew what would happen, but all I could do was watch in horror. Like little shards of glass sparkling to the ground in a violent shatter on the wind. My mind couldn’t comprehend it.
