muffin

The room was full. The concertmaster played the first note. Bow screeching. Horsehair flew, sideways, backwards, fowards into the audience.

The concert was ruined.

inspired

People are inspired by the clouds, the stars. A lot of people are inspired by other people, which then inspire other people, and so on and so forth. The principles of natural rights were made in the 1600′s. And then 1,770 years later they decide to use it in a constitution. That’s inspiration. Just very slow inspiration.

yoga

The yoga instructor was new. She walked into the room and sat on the mat, lifting her leg above her head like some kind of alien, or a character in a movie. No one there could ever do that, this was a class for seniors. No one dared to talk to her, she might think they were interested in pursuing the arts.

tofu

Tofu’s made of something fake, unnatural, built from falseness. You can smell the chemicals steaming off of it, the fake meat protruding from your gut, impossible to dissolve in a snake like small intestine, like a worm gulping down a mouse one inch at a time.

export

I miss myself. I look in the window everyday, at the outside, the cold, the free. I look at the empty parking lot covered in ice and sigh with relief. No chattering, no dancing, no yelling, no screaming. Just silence and air around me. I miss myself, when I’m stuck in a crowd with nothing but my thoughts to keep me company. I miss the air, that I wish I could breathe, when I hear the screams. I miss myself.

hooked

The skies bleed for them, sing for them. The skies melt into puddles, cry for them. The rain washes the puddles, the debris, the tears, the screaming. The night engulfs the men and women trapped in the rubble, waiting for a voice, a sign, a star. The sky listens to their breathing, shallow and slow, the sky hears their thoughts, their lives, their hearts breaking, crushed under the buildings, thousands of buildings. The skies feel the earth shaking.

The one-hooked man blew past the dwarf, the cyclops, and the frog person, wearing a green skin and warts all over his face. He blew wind into the face of a stranger from his sprinting and spit a bug out of his mouth into the crowd. He even tore a sleeve from the largest man in the world as he ran past his ex-girlfriend and headed straight for the only thing that good save him: circus practice.

sink

My stomach untwisted the knot in me, realized something. For so many years, I’ve seen myself as an adult. I’ve talked to my parents, my parents’ friends, my brothers’ friends. I’ve never had that many conversations with my peers. I’ve never looked at myself as one of them, and to associate with them would mean that I have to start a conversation, instead of listen to my older family talk to their friends and so on while I sit in. I’ve realized that my human connection has been with people older than me, usually with more knowledge. I’ve never had to lead a conversation in my life. My stomach sunk.

I washed my hands three times. The bubbles on my skin were weightless. They did nothing to kill the germs, wash off the dead skin. They left my hands feeling as if dirt had been encrusted around them, crusty and dead. I couldn’t wash off the scent of disdain, of scrutiny, of misunderstanding. It was everywhere.

lake

The lake filled with water as the car kept driving. My dad was laughing so hard. I thought his foot would slip on the gas pedal and we would all go down. I took my seat belt off to make sure that I could get out, but I was in the middle. And then mom would drown in the front seat by herself, swearing at dad, while he jumps out of the window before the water reaches his neck. And then my brothers would follow, fighting as the water rose to the ceiling of the car, fighting about their transformers, and how they each wanted them back. They both wanted their toys and now they were drowning. All of us drowning.

cave

The cave was wet and damp and every few seconds you could here a drip of sound echoing in the space of nothing, in empty darkness. I looked around, at the ants crawling on the floor, one by one. I wonder how many things that humans will never know. About how these insects lived for years in a cave never discovered by man.

boxing

The trees hit the violet sky, darkening within minutes, like pen to paper. It was so dark against the dry, almost white air, no sun shining down on the concrete, just a breeze through the sky. The branches glowed gracefully.

tower

Sometimes towers seem to hover in front of you, “tower” over you, as the saying goes. A lot of times I seem to think they’re so much sturdier than everyone around me. People can be cruel, heartless, or warm and welcoming. But towers are always standing tall, without emotion. So much more stable than many of us humans wandering around a crowded city at a strange time of night.

grape

The grapes were plum enough to be picked, all 27 acres. The grass had to be cut down at least 4 inches, so people could walk in the vineyard. And sometimes he took a swig after every row of grapes he picked, savoring that liquid burning down his throat.

flashlight

The light clicked off. It was night, and the asylum looked like a castle under the thundercloud. The earth was cold, it felt almost frozen. People’s dead spirits seemed to be present here, like they never left this place.

tomato

The tomato burst into the air as it was striked by an arrow. The target was perfectly in tact, but the tomato was nowhere to be seen. Robin Hood looked at the target and sighed. He would never win, not like this. He wanted to be the best.

checks

My cat checks the door, watching the snow fall on the patio. She wants to go outside but she knows something is different. She understands that if she goes outside, like many times before, her paws will get soaked in white solid and she won’t feel good. She’ll want to come back in and lick her fur and eat food. But, even knowing all of this, no matter how many times she thinks about it, she wants to go outside.
