brunch

Brunch is such a festive word. It brings to mind leisure and sunny days and good food. Of course, I never have brunch. I always eat and early morning breakfast and then lunch. I never have fancy breakfasts and I don’t really like really sweet things in the morning. They always have desserts at brunch.

demonstration

demonstration – it is a party? it is a movement? it says pay attention to me? it is interesting? It is noisy? it is a protest? it is interesting? It is political? it is a marketing technique?

swing

I used to love to swing. I would go to the park with my brother and we would swing so high – we knew how to pump and we would see who get the highest the fastest. I felt as if I were flying. At some point after my baby was born, I discovered that I couldn’t swing like that anymore. I would get nauseous from the swinging motion. How disappointed I was to discover that!

professional

I am a professional and I pride myself on that. That means that I know my field, I can be pleasant and knowledgable. I behave respectfully to all I encounter at work. I am a team player who looks out for other employees as well as those members of the public that I serve. I do my best work.

town

I love my little town. It’s really not that little – maybe about 8,000 residents. But I work in town and I play in town. I know lots of people and i never know to whom I might run into when i go to the grocery or the post post office or take the dog for a walk. It is a

sweat

blood sweat and tears sweating a river sweatshop I am surprised at how little I do sweat when I take long bike rides. Perhaps it just evaporates but mostly my sin stays dry.

popcorn

POPCORN! Love that stuff. I is best just plain – no butter, please. Just some salt – perfect! I like the kind that is cooked in a pot on the stove, not the mircrowaved version or the kind that they sell at the movies. As kids we got to have popcorn every Friday night while watching Gilligan’s Island and it is still an event that means it is time to relax.

lift

I need a lift. I need to figurer out the next step. It should be so simpe. Keep on working until you no longer HAVE to – maybe another five years. Keep on existing in your home. Keep on reading, seeing family, supporting your children in their goals. and then retire and live. Really live. Lift yourself up.

clue

Give me a clue Give me a clue about how to live this life. I have tried and now I am aware that the years have spun by. I wonder if I have done it right or enough and how to change that. Give me a clue about the purpose. Give me a clue about what is the best path to take. Give me a clue about what it means to be the best, to do the best.

walls

Walls – that is an ongoing topic with me. I learned how to build walls from watching my dad. He was a brick layer but he also knew how to wall himself off from other people. I like to paint walls (as in with acrylics). I like to see walls and photograph wall. Sometimes I even climb on walls or walk on walls.

orbit

Going into orbit – I go to the moon. July 19 / 20, 1969 I will never forget the wonder of that night. My entire family gathered around the tv to watch the events unfolding on the moon. My brother Mark and I then went outside and looked at the summer moon — maybe it was a full moon? At least it was close to full. I was awestruck knowing that people were there.

camera

My camera has become one of my best friends. I love what he allows me to do. My eyes are much more open now that I carry a camera. I am always on the lookout for memorable images, , cool scenes. I most enjoy playing with composition and color. I like taking photos that are not immediately obvious to the viewer. I am less a landscape photographer and more a portrait photographer (but mostly when the subject is unaware).

festival

Festival of delight. There were the fiestas that the parishes held every year. They really were festivals – complete with carnival rides and booths and food and usually some kind of dance for the adults. These events were enormous fundraisers for the parish. We called them fiesta for the local reason. Now we have festivals that are music or art related and cost a fortune. I mostly find them boring and rarely attend . As a kid I loved the parish fiesta b/c it always came right at the end of the the school year – it meant sumer was days away.

function

Function vs. Form I can see the need for both. I like the beauty of form but I am also a practical person. I can see the value in function and don’t ask me which one triumphs. I think in my world form would triumph. I like how things look and feel – I am more in tune with that than I am with the use of something except when it comes to shoes – - or clothes in general – I have to be comfortable even though I want to be styling.

liberty

Give me liberty or give me death. That sentence was repeated to me over and over as a kid. And the name Patrick Henry in relationship to that quote was handed to me over and over. For some reason my dad liked this expression. Perhaps it was because he was a WW2 vet and it meant a lot to him. I don’t think of liberty very much. I do think more of freedom. Freedom is the the opportunity to have choices in life and to exercise those choices.

runway

Runway! Excitement! Airports! Fast speeds! Butterflies in the stomach! Watching out the window! Seeing the Earth slip away! Seeing the clouds get closer and closer! Hanging from the blue sky! Let’s go!

dozen

Cheaper by the Dozen – I enjoyed reading that book often when I was a kid. I grew up in a big family and, overall, it was fun and a valuable preparation for life. Though we were not a dozen I always wished we could have been. There is something very neat and tidy about that . I would have enjoyed the novelty of being one of a dozen kids

apron

I made an apron once. I was 7 years old and it was my first sewing project. I wanted to learn to use the sewing machine but my mother insisted that before I sewed on the machine, I must learn to sew by hand. The apron was a project that allowed me to work on straight seams and small stitches. I wore that apron proudly as a young girl. I still have it upstairs in the cedar chest.

thorns

Thorns can be long and sharp but they can also be tiny and sharp. They protect the roses but they hurt my hands, I don’t think they are pretty and they don’t seem to protect the roses from little tiny bugs. They only protect from large creatures who might want to smash them, Maybe I need thorns to grow on me.

trunk

Tree trunks are pretty darn cool. They are stable and colorful and full of detail. We used to have an avocado tree in the back yard when I was kid. You could ride horses on that tree because the trunk was shaped like a horse’s back. We were forever playing cowboys and Indians and riding that horse across the Plains.

champagne

Champagne – lovely color, ugly taste. Those bubbles and the sharpness are not my style. I like the sparkles, I like the color, ! like the lightness of being. Tiny bubbles float away, make some people happy but not for me. I am light and sparkly and bright and shiny like champagne.

glimmer

Glimmer of hope – a sparkle of delight – the tinest piece that will come true. A glimmer is just the perfect amount to keep you going. You are not saturated. I once felt a glimmer of hope and it built into the real pleasure called life.

estate

An estate is big, beautiful and not mine. But actually I do have an estate – if by that you mean a home and a yard – but they also talk about estate sales. That means someone had possessions when they died and now it is time to get rid of them. When I die Iwill have an estate that someone will have to take care of. My goal is to lose as much as possible before that time comes.

bridge

There are bridges in life – that which join one part of life to another – the thing is, you don’t always know when you are crossing a bridge – you can’t alway look down and know where you are going or even that you are on a bridge. It would be cool to always know and to be able to look over the edge with confidence .

dessert

Dessert – it is a killer – I guess I go immediately to the kind that you eat but dessert could b different stuff. Reading my book is dessert after a long day, writing and painting are dessert after a long week. The eating kind of dessert can be so disappointing – i would rather have the non eating version of dessert.

carved

My heart is carved in stone or sometimes I think that it should be – I painted a heart last summer that shows the broken pieces, the torn and broken pieces, the shards of my heart. I need to carve out new things with my heart.

deaf

How hard it would be to be deaf – not to be able to listen to music or the sound of the ocean or hear children’s voices. I never think of the value of hearing except when I can’t – and then I get frustrated with not being able to distinguish what is being said.
