earring

All they had was my earring. Yet, somehow that was enough to track me down. Somehow their “wizards” and obsessives at their lab performed some kind of magic and traced me. From an earring that I dropped on the ground. One fucking earring.

desk

She sat there, hunched over her desk. They were the same notes she had been pouring through all day. Maybe they would say something new this time. Hopefully. Her eyes were heavy as she scanned through the same paragraph for the hundredth time.

entice

“Could I entice you to try this?” he asked. “No, it really doesn’t look like something I’d like,” she replied. “Not even just one bite?” “I’d rather not.” “What if I tried it first?” “Do you really want to stick that in your mouth?”

hood

His head was obscured under a hood. Sleek and red, it draped a shadow over his entire face. I’m sure he wanted it that way. There was no way to read anything about him. No tell. No facial twitches. No body language.

flip

“Come on, it’s an easy flip!” he said. He was laughing. Maybe he was trying to be encouraging, but it just sounded mocking. An easy flip. When you’re twenty feet in the air with no net below you, there’s no such thing as an “easy flip”.

attendant

The attendant walked up to their table and handed them the wrapped bag. A quick nod of his cap and the attendant scurried off. They both looked at the bag with odd, inquisitive looks. It was small, and such an odd shape.

duration

“Just stick with it through the duration of the next part,” they had said. At the time Matt didn’t think it would be that bad. But at the time Matt didn’t understand just how bad the next part was. Now he was withing that he hadn’t mad such a seemingly benign agreement.

town

This town… Sometimes I don’t even know. I can’t take it here anymore. Every street here. Every shop. Every corner. It’s all the fucking same. Always the same. Nothing’s changed here in my entire life, and I”m tired of it. I have to get out. Must get out, some way.

weave

They raced down the hill, weaving in and out of the treeline in an attempt to stay out of sight. Every once in a while one of them would look back, to check, but they never saw anything. Which was exactly how we wanted it.

lantern

He lit the lantern by the door. It didn’t help much, but it helped a little. Any little bit of light that we could get wasn’t something I should complain about I guess. This was the third night in a row. The days weren’t so bad. Sunny. Dry. But the nights. The sounds that came from out there. We needed all the light we could get.

curse

She read the curse out loud. Everyone listened to it. No one believed in any of these silly superstitions. The curse seemed to do nothing. We flipped through the book some more. There wasn’t anything interesting in it. At least, that’s what we thought at the time.

ants

They were everywhere! We thought the kitchen was clean. But we went to bed last night and today, ants. Ants everywhere. There are dozens of traps and chemicals that one can buy to get rid of them, but right now I kind of just want to burn the house to the ground. Let’s go all ‘scorched earth’ on these little bastards.

flirt

She was nervous about talking to the guy at the end of the bar. They had been exchanging glances and smiles all night. In fact the drink she was currently sipping on was ordered by him. It was what convinced her that she needed to talk to him. However, the last time she tried flirting with a guy it somehow ended with her insulting his grandmother.

carnival

He didn’t want to go to the carnival. We had fought about it for an hour. I was convinced it would be good for him though. So here we were, at the carnival. I’m not sure what came over me. He wasn’t ready. I should have known that. It really doesn’t help that he’s so much faster than I am. Right now here could be anywhere in the area, he took off so fast it was hard to keep track of him through the crowd.

butterfly

“Follow it!” she said. That was easy for her to say. The butterfly was fluttering about, but every time I tried getting close, it seemed to be able to anticipate my moves, and flutter just enough to make me look like a fool for trying to catch it at all. I was a fool I guess. Back in those days we all were.

epic

The clap of thunder was unexpected. Ducking quietly behind the bushes they tried to remain as silent as they could. But the thunder forced a gasp from their mouth. It wasn’t loud, but in the still of the night it seemed to them to be deafening. Another clap of thunder struck. They weren’t prepared for the epic rumble it produced. Just then the realized they couldn’t remain here for long.

liberty

“Give me Liberty or give me death!” was always the cliched saying. I rather prefer life though. While you’re alive you can always continue fighting for liberty. In death, well you can’t do much of anything then. Which is why I’m running right now, from those guys with the guns.

bellow

She wasn’t confident of her ability to sing that tune. We’d argued about it all night at the bar. It seemed like there was no way I was going to get her on stage to sing it. Finally though, at the tail end of the night, and likely aided by the booze, I coaxed her on stage. The karaoke machine began playing. I wasn’t sure she was going to begin, she was turning so red. Then suddenly, she lifted her head up and began bellowing out the lines like they had been stored up all night.

bench

Sam missed the bench. He had tried so hard to reach it. All of his available brain power had been devoted to getting his body to the bench. Instead he was only able to reach the grass in front of it, where he collapsed on to all four limbs. Despite internal protest, all the contents of Sam’s stomach began shooting out of his mouth with violent force.

crisp

Crisp air hit my face. It took what seemed like forever, but here we were, atop this mountain. This challenge. Some thought it would be the death of us, that we’d end up at the bottom, or stuck on some ledge for the vultures to feast on us. But here we are, in the crisp air.

conceal

It was hidden there. Behind her eyes, away from where others could find it. She didn’t want anyone to see it, not even me. Especially not me. I’m persistent like that though. I find what needs to be found.
