savage

He flew at her with a savage growl, and pointed the knife at her throat. She dodged aside just in time, catching him off balance, and knocking him to the ground. Then she ran. She ran like she was in the final few yards of an Olympic race, and she was going for gold.

oil

It seeped from the crippled tanker like a stream black death–a floating viscous black ribbon that stretched out across the waves.

scar

She traced the scar with the tip of her finger, remembering the searing pain of the knife as it carved its mark into her skin. She hadn’t run. Instead, she’d fought back, possessed by a power borne of fear and pain. When forced to chose between fight or flight, flight had never been an option.

autumn

The leaves had begun to don their fiery foliage, and chill was in the air. Autumn was making it’s presence known, and everything smelled of woodsoake, and leaves. I sat on my porch listening to the calls of the birds who would winter here. For me, winter was the only season left.

forgotten

She looked at the forgotten toy, left strewn across a dusty shelf. His ears were tattered, and his chestnut fur had been worn away in places. Black glass eyes were scratched and empty, devoid of the life.

console

He wrapped her arms around her shoulders and tried to console her. She buried her face into his shoulder as her body was wracked with sobs.

crew

The crew fought to turn the ship around, fighting against the churning seas and fierce winds. They were moments from disaster–rapidly bearing down on the jagged rocks ahead.

escape

I have to escape. I hear them closing in, the staccato rhythm of their boots on the hard linoleum floor. I make myself small and pray the darkness will conceal me.

cross

It was her cross to bear–the knowledge that she had let them down–that she had let him down. And at the moment when they had needed her most, had counted on her to rise to the occasion.

chaos

The scene descended into chaos. People were screaming, running, desperately trying to escape the hail of bullets and tear gas, calling out for friends and family who were lost in the crowd.

pawn

She never loved him. He was just a pawn that she used to get what she wanted–a dispensable piece in the sick game that she played.

common

He was a common man caught in an uncommon situation. Before him stood one of the most formidable obstacles he had ever faced, and behind him was a danger he could barely comprehend. If he could have turned back, he would have, but the only option was to continue forward.

beach

I spread my beach towel over the hot sand and dug a bottle of SPF 30 sunscreen from the dark recesses of my pool bag. All along the coast, other vacationers had set up folding chairs and brightly colored umbrellas that now dotted the beach like giant, rainbow flowers.

tide

The tide came in slowly, gradually erasing a afternoon’s worth of footprints and sandcastles. It came as certainly as the days pass into years, softening the sharp edges of memory.

suit

She squinted into the mirror, sizing up the thirteenth wedding dress she had tried on that day. It didn’t suit her any better than the last twelve–it felt totally out of character for her–like a putting a football player in a tutu.

wrapped

She wrapped the light blanket around her shoulders and leaned back into the cushions of the wicker chair. The sky was burned with the colors of the setting sun, and the few thin clouds that streaked across the horizon were like streams of liquid gold.

pillar

The sandstone pillar stood alone amidst the dunes, a relic of some long forgotten age. It was beginning to crumble and succumb to the elements, yet it’s stateliness was not diminished.

rocket

We watched as the rocket broke free from the bonds of gravity and like a phoenix, sped toward the heavens in a cloud of fire and smoke.

meaning

People are always trying to give meaning to meaningless things. The chance encounter at the grocery store, the dream you had last night, a moment of eye contact with a stranger–empty nothings that we fill with our own imagined symbolism.

stand

It was time to take a stand against all of the injustice of the world. It was time to stand up to the tyrants, the oppressors, the slave drivers. They would unite and together, they would change the world.

stride

He crossed the field quickly, taking one long stride after another. He always moved like that–with a purpose, anxious to get to his next destination. She just hoped that he didn’t forget to look around now and then, and just enjoy the ride.
