lock

Lock the heart, the interest rates, the key. Lock the keys inside the car and walk away. Be glad you can walk. Don’t tell me to be glad, don’t tell me how to feel. Too many voices in my head, too many hairs on my head, too many eyebrows. Lock and snap, Lock & Lock. Lunch. Red.

middle

In the middle of the snowstorm, a tulip. Slowly accreting its margin of white, lips on lips, white on red. Snow is quiet. When you’re looking at a picture, you forget how quiet it is. You forget how strange the women’s footprints look, the tiny spike heel and triangle toe. What kind of animal made this? A tulip?

princess

Louie is a princess. Princess Pink. I have a photo of him wearing a tiara. He looks worried. His ears are half-up, half-down; his eyes are doubtful. But I know how good he looks in frosted pink. He is our pretty pretty princess. He has the nails for it, too. What a good dog. Good princess Louie!

beloved

o beloved internet, o pencil, o orange juice I think of you as I ride the bus. Even at my gray cubicle I have the mint tea, from Morroco, from Africa. I may have no original thoughts, I may have my monitor raised on three reams of white paper starting to yellow, but the world is with me, beloved world. Today I have a newborn.

reward

“Your reward is the smell of the ocean.” Which sounds very poetic, she thought, but unfortunately the smell of the ocean, to her, meant unfairness. It meant all the times when Lily was at school til late at night, and there was nothing to do but go for one of those overrated walks on the beach. Suckage.

grid

On the grid I am busy burning, burning, burning the oil and the coal and the wood and the water sluicing through the dam and killing the fish like a giant set of Ginzu knives. My television is on the grid, turning it blue and red with that peculiar television light, but I am off to the fridge, standing in front of the cold cold light, basking. One square, two. One eye, two.

sixteen

Sixteen candles was the movie playing on the vcr when my best friend came out to me. It was me and Michaela and Christine, over at Christine’s house because her mom didn’t care about housecleaning and things were comfortable there, with food in the cupboards for scrounging. It was dark.

idol

idol my heart aches, an idol gets in your stomach and you start feeling nervous somewhere around your armpits, gooseflesh on the back of your upper arms. Pay attention. An idol breaks my heart, an American idol, a Chinese idol, the idol no one knows about, I ache to tell but cannot. Oh, idol. Idle. I doll.

vow

I vow to overcome them. I vow to attain the procurement of food. I vow never to underappreciate indoor plumbing. I listen to others’ vows, and I am baffled. What the hell… poverty?? Wha- celibacy, what THE HELL! Then I go home and have a PBJ and get under the covers with my vibrator. Go out for some bubble tea, wish there was someone to call to hang out. It’s a life, what can I say.

trained

I was trained as a spy, and this still influences the way I keep my house. Spare, but with a few telltale hairs on the surfaces so I will know if someone has been there. I keep my spy toys in an old canvas duffle bag at the back of the closet. Cliche? Maybe, but then so are the three additional canvas duffel bags filled with old shoes, surrounding it. I think about these things.

passport

passport to opportunity, but first you have to get through security. They ask you questions there, like, do you still have your security blanket or did you allow it to be thrown out? Or did you pitch it into the trash yourself? Hm. I see. How do you feel about chocolate pudding? Then there’s the background check and if all goes well, you’re in!

misunderstood

Misunderstood, I’m so misunderstoooood, from the metal to the wood, I’m misunderstood! You don’t understand, let me hold up my hand, let me start a new band, which you’ll misunderstand! When you look at me you see, with an eye for more than pie, well, what? You don’t know, you can’t say…I’m misunderstood.

sugar

sugar, sugar, sugar and spice. Sugar makes everything nice, don’t it? Sugar in the tomato sauce, sugar in the coffee, sugar in the salty peanuts. If sugar were still made out of cane we’d be a bunch of happy sugar canes, clacking and clapping in the wind. Unfortunately sugar is corn now, and our world is corny, and the people on the internet worry too much about their children and whether things are appropriate. Make them bland, like corn. Except sweet corn.
