trophy

no one ever asked her how she felt. maybe it wasn’t so great sitting at home all day, with her husband out on business trips all the time. the maids who come clean the house don’t get along with her well, so she doubts they would even be friends if they could all speak the same language. she does get together with friends, but there is always a sense of anxiety amongst the group when they get together. she worries about the inevitable day when her metabolism will slow down, and botox can always have its less than desirable side effects. besides, she would really like to travel some day. maybe stay in hostels, not have to worry about manicuring her lawn nor her nails, and just throw all the bullcrap to the wind.

sticks

there may be those who words will never hurt, but i’m worried they are ones who live isolated within their own worlds. little room for others. with tall tall walls defending their own sense of self with no flexibility, no consideration. Sticks, stones, words, they all stimulate the same part of the brain in charge of physical and emotional pain, as a result of bruises and heartbreaks. this is according to scientists published in an national geographic article, who obviously know what they are talking about.

cigarette

i used to hack and cough as i walked by smokers. at the time, i justified it with thinking it would encourage them to quit. also it probably made my friends laugh. it’s not healthy, but i do plenty of things that aren’t healthy either. being rude doesn’t help anyone.

cast

she cast her net wide. not only because she knew this is essential for success, but also because she was a social butterfly. to say she was working her networking connections would be giving her too much credit, she never thought of it that way as it just came natural to her.

stem

the root of his unhappiness stemmed from a sense of lackadaisical laziness. he knew there was so much to do, and could even name them one by one in his head, but just couldn’t find the umph to do them.

assisted

the girl came into the office. the doctor spoke to her, but it was assumed the words were for her mother, her primary caretaker since she hit her head and got cerebral palsy since age 1. she wiped some drool from the corner of her mouth.

braid

it must be the feel of my mother’s hands as she weaves through my hair. very determined hard tugs, never painful, but it gives me a natural facelift. this is just like her.

honest

to be honest, there are few people as honest as the narrator in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. as a species, human beings are so preoccupied with fitting in, we forget to think for ourselves sometimes. it takes guts, i guess.

wade

such an unfortunate thing, to be stuck with such a name. he thought so too. although it was hardly fair to blame his parents. at the time it was not necessarily a popular name, but they thought it sounded quite dashing. now it only evokes an image of one awkwardly shuffling through a muddy stream in heavy military boots.

crush

she had no idea what came over her, it was so stupid! standing in the humid hot lobby, hesitating to press the buzzer. imagining his voice on the other end, and being unsure of what to say back. would she sound stupid to him? she didn’t understand the emotion, but she wanted so badly for him to take notice of her, and in a positive way. So what should she say?
