stories

They’re how I live. I embellish and I hyperbolize. That’s how I fill in the holes of my life. As someone I admire would say, it’s not that I hate my life, it’s that I need to patch in all the empty spaces and ugly spots with a humorous filling.

All of them together weave a cliched quilt. It’s common, but it’s my life anyhow. I’ve got a racist grandpa and a crazy cousin. I’ve had a bad breakup and a love story worthy of a romance novel, just like the rest of you.

burning

That is what her old life is doing. She tossed it in the dumpster and poured gasoline all over it. She lit a match and set it all on fire. The flames reach towards the heavens and call her name, but she doesn’t turn; she just keeps on walking away.

She’s always been a wordy one. Goodbyes and hellos last far too long. What she ought to do is cut through her words. Light them on fire. Listen to the crackling. Watch the letters burning away. Ink going up in flames.

enemies

I saw her standing over me, brandishing the bloodied knife. When I awoke, however, it was in my own hand and I realized that there wasn’t another person. Myself and I were enemies all along; I splattered my own blood on the walls and floor. I’ll always have the scar to remind myself of that.

She won’t stop – she’s a brutal killer. She’ll take your blood and smear it all over the walls, leaving a message for everyone to see. “Bitch,” it will read. As you lay dying, you’ll think about how you didn’t even know that the two of you were enemies.

crow

Matt was woken up for the third day in a row by the crow outside his window.

“I’m going to kill that goddamn bird!”

WIth that, he set off for the back door with his rifle.

The bell tolled twelve times. The solemn procession began and as the mourners made their way into a church, a crow flew overhead and landed on the steeple. It’s cries put the final dark accent on the afternoon.

bowling

Bowling Green University. The stadium passes us on our right. This is the sign that we are about halfway to Mimi and Papa’s house in Columbus. A trip that I used to loathe. Now I’d give anything to be able to make that trip again.

Every Wednesday my mother and her friends go bowling. I suppose that it’s their way to escape the world.

I can imagine their happiness as they socialize around drinks and bowling friends, away from the world for a few hours.

checkmate

And just like that, I was done. A slash on the wrist and a tear in my eye. A scar that I would have for the rest of my life if I lived to tell the tale.

Which I did, and I thank God every day for that very fact. A near checkmate.

Posted By Madi On 04.24.2013 @ 10:31 am

Checkmate. That’s a word for people who play chess. I feel as if I am going to sit down to my two exams tomorrow and each one will say “checkmate!” before I even begin. I am so screwed. I cannot even begin to tell you how stressed out I am right now.

vines

The vines crept down slowly from the trees above. They rustled ever so slightly. To anyone else, their subtle movements would be unnoticeable. However, I was on high alert. My ears perked up with the slight movement, and I leapt away from the foliage.

smudge

How could she do this to me! I specifically told her no smudges! But look they’re everywhere! All over my car windows! She just had to stick those little grubby fingers all over my windows. I can’t wait to tell mom, know little miss perfect will get a talking to, finally. You could say I’m being a little harsh but for a ten year old this is just unexceptable.

wheat

she stood in the field of wheat thinking about how this is where her new life would begin. She was just 18 and already she knew she had left everything behind , the wind whistled through the wheat in a strangely calming manor

end

Finality. The close of something. A sad, yet hopeful word. The end of something, the beginning of another.

game

“This is just a game to you.” He wanted to reject the words, to spit fire at her until she understood just how wrong she was. But something stopped him. It was a game. How had it come to this? At one point he had loved her.

five

Five is fun. I remember being the kid running around outside getting dirty and playing with bugs until I crashed. From noon until night I was always busy playing. I had so much fun imagining in my own little world.

past

It was much past the time she should have left. She could already tell that she was going to regret these next few minutes, but she couldn’t stop herself from turning around, couldn’t keep her feet from running towards him. “I miss you already,” she whispered in his ear as she leapt into his arms. He kissed her as a response. They held onto each other desperately and wished for the rest of the world to slip away.

soon

“Soon.” That’s all he said as he let go of my hand and walked down the street in the opposite direction. I watched him until he was out of site. All I could think about was how soon soon really was. Could it be days? Weeks? Even months? I didn’t know how long I could wait for “Soon.”

measured

She stared down at the number between her feet. Not good enough, she thought. Never good enough. Her life is not measured by the breaths she takes; rather, it’s measured by the number on the scale. It’s been that way for a year now, she’s been keeping count. 130 wasn’t good enough, neither was 120. When she got to 110, she thought maybe just 10 more pounds, and when she got to 100, it still didn’t satisfy her. What ever will?

roar

a lion. the most powerful creature, majestic and strong. he travels in a pack, domineering over the rest, though their loyalty is palpable in the pictures I’ve experienced. They stick together, they work together. They don’t let anything break their bond. Roar. A squeak at the end of the day that says so much.

teeth

She smiled and he noticed the gap in her teeth. It was nice. It made her smile warm and soft. “You look really pretty,” he told her, smiling himself. He had no gap in his teeth, but she liked his smile just the same. She grinned in response.

charge

I want to take charge of my life and know where I am going in life. I dont want other people to decide for me. I want me to be in charge and no one can tell me what to do. Only I can decide my life and no one not even my mother can be in charge of me.

happy

“You look happy,” he said with a grin as she wound her arms around his neck and kissed his jaw. “Mmm,” she hummed against his skin. He chuckled and vibration in his chest sent shivers up her spine. “Deliriously,” she replied.

claim

“There’s no way I’m going to believe that claim,” he told her defiantly. “It’s not a claim. It’s true,” she shot back angrily. “Really? You honestly expect me to believe that you don’t have any feelings for me?” “You should, because it’s true,” she snapped.

despite

Despite it all, she still loved him. She wished that she could stop. It would make things much easier. “Bye,” he grunted as he gave her a peck on the cheek and headed out the door. She hardly noticed, too busy staring out the window at the man walking past. She wondered if he remembered her, if he thought about her, if he ever felt the same.

towers

The towers stood, strong and silent, and she stared at them for a few minutes; ignoring the bustling city around her, the sounds and sights urging her forward, content to merely stare at the world. The car honked loudly behind her and she forced her gaze away, emerging from her trance to head onward.

stillness

There was a stillness in the night. The breeze picked up speed and she shivered, leaning against him. Neither of them took their eyes away from the lake. “Love you K,” he murmured as he kissed her head, mesmerized by the blinding reflected light.
