The cop at the middle of the street signaled at me as I drove by. Oh crap; I forgot, it’s coding day. I pulled over and rolled the window open. As he came up, I subtly waved a couple of bills folded neatly in half and asked, “What’s the problem, chief?”

I had a craving for chicken burrito at 10 in the evening, so I had a late dinner delivered. An hour later, my meal arrived — and the delivery boy turned out to be this kid whose grandmother I knew but lost touch with and had wondered about the night before. Uncanny.
