welfare
Welfare. Welfare. Talk about welfare is rampant since it’s election season here in Malaysia. The word rolls of the tongue funny. Reading the news and all BN can talk about is how they are gonna improve welfare of the people- sickly, elderly, children, women, workers, men, Chinese, Malay, Indian, Sabahan, Sarawakians…

wall
the walls coming crashing down on me. I feel my heart drifting as the walls are caving in. I am a wall. I am one to lean onto and one to pushed when needed but, I will never change. I am a wall. I do not need anyone because I am a wall.

stir
She stirred the stupid potion. What a bunch of bullshit all this was. A good witch knows how to make potions, they said. A good witch doesn’t complain when they have to mix eye of newt with nasty butt farts, they said. She swore she’d turn them all into toads one day.

decorations
I noticed the decorations adorning the mantel above the fireplace, and my grandfathers medals from when he was a militant during whenever the hell that was. God, it was a while ago that I first noticed that shit, and the flag from his funeral. Fuck, how time flies..

suggestion
There’s something about giving a suggestion. It’s a struggle to make a good one to a close friend. It’s easy to throw them out there for someone you hardly know. But when do people really think before they give them out? For themselves? The people they really love? Is there ever a time when people think about a suggestion with a possible solution?

grind
The grinding of the machine still haunted my every waking hour. The images of my dear dog, bounding up the metal stairs to great me with a ‘clank…clank’ sound. The horrifying reality of sorrow and terror, as little sparky tripped and fell with clumsy grace into the grinder that caused his death. The sickening sound of dog whimpers and flesh grinding together in a sickening symphony that enticed my horrors.

collar
Every woman loves wearing nice collars. She’s even more happy if it’s a lovely present from her loving husband. She wears it and everyone can see: she’s loved.

conviction
The quality that one must have in order to convince smeone that something is genuine or sincere. “I love you,” she said, but without much conviction. See what I mean? The word that can distort and force words, cloyingly, into a farce.

pressed
I didn’t know exactly what I was doing. I was sitting there, laboring over something I couldn’t understand. I didn’t know exactly how I was going to fix it. I had less than an hour, and it had better be damn good by then. It was staring me right in the face, and I had no other way to get out of it. It was now or never, but the now would never come. I couldn’t be inspired. I couldn’t get my brain to work. It was scary, how effective a time limit was. I was pressed for time.

average
Average. Average is kind of a mean word. That means that there are worse things, but there are definitely better things, too. I want to be better than average. I don’t like average foods. Fast food is below average, but I’d say that chain food restaurants are all about average.

repeat
Repetition. One after the other after the other after the other after the other. Boredom. Memorization. A gradual wearing down of the joints and drooping of the eyelids. Repeat after me. A A B B C C…and so on. Tradition. A passing down, a handing off.

lock
I need a lock for my locker. That’s the thing that keeps my insides from falling out. My insides are held into a steel cage of death and pain. That’s school. My papers come spilling out the top, the sides of my locker. Everything comes with an avalanche. Destruction and tears. Held back with a lock. Tha

straw
Like finding a needle in a haystack, they said. It wouldn’t be easy. Nearly impossible. But did we listen? No. Of course not. When did we ever listen to what those bighat aristocrats had to say. We just plowed on, making our course to what would eventually be the greatest event in history:

antlers
Deer have antlers. They use them to show off their authority, and to make themselves seem bigger. It’s like the power suit, but for deer or moose. It’s a position, it’s to try and make yourself seem more important. My power suit cost three grand. How big are your antlers?

belief
Belief in things that aren’t true is perhaps the number one problem of today’s society. If I was a bitter old man (or woman) I might go on about people being too gullible, but you might not want to be using such a cold word. They’re mostly too trusting, which is a bad thing but not a morally impure one certainly.

wonder
Wonder is poetry; it is a new angle one takes on the world, a particular way of seeing things with your head tilted this way or that. Wonder can make us fearful, but fear does not interfere with the simplicity and the purpose of contemplation. This special kind of attention one pays to the world is the greatest celebration of life, death, and nature and of all things that came to us when we write.

I wonder about lots of things sometimes. Like, life. And things. And people. I mean, how difficult it is to say things and make them have sense. And I wonder if that nonsense will go away eventually. But it usually doesn’t and it hasn’t yet, so now I just sit here. And I wonder.

smile
Smile. The world isn’t as bad as you imagine it. Just smiling can make you happy – some scientific dude proved that. But seriously, you know I love you, and you know we’re all here for you, and maybe deep down you know your problems aren’t as bad as you imagine, and with the perspective of a few years, looking back, you’ll realize your tears weren’t as warranted as you think they are now. So smile. So live.

train
There is something fascinating about the philosophy of underground trains. It’s all about the people you meet there. The New York underground, for example, is so incredibly full of society’s weirdos and misfits that it’s basically like an insane asylum on wheels.

beloved
Beloved. Sometimes I wish there was somebody I could call that, but then I laugh at myself. As if. The mountain and the clouds are enough.

remember
There are things I will remember all my life, like that really weird and intense night when he asked you to marry him and you were all, “tra la la la la…”. But most of the time I forget stuff pretty easily. I don’t know where my car keys are right now, for example, and yesterday I forgot to pay the bills again.
