hover

The hovercraft floated toward him, seeming to hover over the ground as if floating on air. Which made sense, since that’s exactly what it was doing: hovering.

It smashed into his face. His face exploded. His brain exploded. The bits and pieces started hovering, too, because that’s just the way he played things. Hoveringly.

I’ve never liked it. The way it looked, it tasted, especially the texture of it. It reminds me of track meets and baseball games. Here goes the pitch, and as I look next to me a bag full of red goo hardened together is getting offered to myself. I always said no.

startled

She startled me when she walked in the door. I should have been anticipating it, but had gotten so caught up in the moment that I forgot the time. Of course she would be walking in. Work was over. And there I was, banging her sister on the couch when she opened the door. I can only imagine how startled SHE was to see it.

She startled me with the intense look in her eyes. It was an intensity I had never seen before, and I was startled more than I had ever been in my life. My heart seized in my chest and it felt like I couldn’t breathe. How could one person be capable of such a thing? I wondered as she looked through me.
