  2. Every night, just before bed, she would mournfully braid her long raven hair back into a thick knot behind her head. Every morning, just before dawn, she would quietly escape the suffocating house, shed her clothes, release her braid and then dance below the darkened sky, naked and free.

  5. I remember when you used to braid my hair when I was younger. I always wondered what happened to you.. I never saw you after 5th grade. I never got the chance to tell you what a difference you made in my life as a role model when my mother wasn’t around. For that I hope that your life is filled with joy. That simple act of braiding my hair when I was younger taught me so much about my own self worth, self confidance, and knowing that someone had my back. It’s a tough world and I guess I never thought that just simple braids could affect me so much, well that was until you, until now, until I reflected on the memory of your office and how you treated me with respect. Thank you.

  8. A french braid twisted round her back, shimmering and shing in the sunlight like an eel, glistening and still damp, drying quickly in the sun-dapled air. She turned and smiled for a seond, but it faded like the the neatness of the already unruly braid, as the hair came undone and so did the memory.

  33. The acidity in her expression was blatantly obvious. She was clearly a volatile brew of hate, hurt, and revenge that was oddly diffused by the twee braid in her hair, finished with a hideous bow. What was she, 9 years old? For that I pitied her and tried to stifle a laugh. How could she be taken seriously when her dress was all “frou-frou”, her shoes were shiny red mary janes, and her hair looked like she’d just come from pony club. God, now I was just as angry at her as she was with me.
