  12. To have a chat with a friend is to chitter and chatter, sometimes about substantial things, often otherwise. Birds chatter too, often too much about nonsense, but then perhaps birds make sense to themselves. I think that having a chat with a friend is crucial, because when you stop talking to people, that’s when you know you’re dead. Things may be full of nonsense, but it’s how you tell someone hey there, I’m here.

  27. The green dot appears next to his name. I wait a few minutes. He’s still online. I click on his name and type ‘Hey’ in the chat box. And then I wait. I know he’s seen my message. But he hasn’t replied yet. Am I too annoying? Does his girlfriend not want him to talk to me? Have I done something wrong? For the next hour I sit at my computer anxiously awaiting his reply. After I’ve spent half my night like this, I resign to the fact he’s not going to reply. I need to learn that I’m not his best friend anymore.
