  1. Dense space fills the lacuna between us. It’s thick shadow haunts our bodies leaving us emotionless harsh and cold. The density compacts our bodies leaving us numb and fragile.

  3. The denseness of the flesh of the Honeycrisp apple surprised him as he eased his butcher’s knife through the varying diameter of its body. Still shaken by the rusty blue pick-up truck clipping his dog earlier in the afternoon, his hand was unsteady. The black carbon handle of the knife, which he had just rinsed in the double-basin stainless steel Kohler kitchen sink, was wet. The ball of his right hand, located just below where the index finger joined his palm, was the primary source of pressure on the top side of the knife handle. He leaned into the motion and pressed down harder. His eye twitched. His nose tingled. He sneezed. And then, unknown to him, his hand pressed the knife down through the apple and the index, middle and ring fingers of his left hand. The world seemed to freeze in place as he stared down at the grotesque animated still life depicting two halves of an apple laying open on the antipodal points of what used to be a whole apple, three detached fingertips aligned behind the left half apple and a pool of blood seeping across the backdrop like anti-gravity curtains in an upside down theater.

  4. For homework we have to guess the density of stuff on our desks at home. It says: Choose three items from your desk and estimate their density. I don’t have a desk at home. I thought I would just use some of the crap on the kitchen counter, but then I realized people would think I was really weird if I had NAPKINS, BUTTER, and EMPTY PICKLE JAR in my room. Science sucks.

  5. Trees and water are dense. Some things have density in the scientific sense, but also in Harry Potter it is used as an insult. By calling some one dense, you are calling them stupid.

  7. Dense is a word that I’m having a problem understanding. I have only heard people use it talking about water or fog. “That water is dense.” “The fog was very dense this morning.” The definition is crowded or closely compacted.

  8. crowded, a lot of population.

  9. Well, people can be really dense. As in stupid. Dense can also refer to density, as in how dense something is. I feel lke a bit of a dictionary, just spouting off what it means. But I’m in school; it’s what I’m trained to do. Grr…I’m used to typing on my iPhone with autocorrect and stuff and it usually puts in apostrophes for me. How much longer do I have left? I’m pretty sure its been more than sixty seconds. Maybe not, though. Are there supposed to be more r’s in grr? Whatever, I feel so ADHD right now. I keep bouncing from topic to topic even though I’m supposed to be writing about dense stuff.

  10. Jensen lay there in the sand and occasional leaf and tried to catch his breath and figure out exactly what just happened. It was warm and humid and he could feel sunlight warming his back. And off in the distance he could hear voices, but he couldn’t quite place their meaning.

    “Wha…huh? Baka?”

  12. Water is dense. I actually really hate that I received this word. I have no clue what to write about. I feel like an idiot. All I can think of is one thing. Science. Then my head goes blank. So I really don’t know what to keep writing about, but I can tell you one thing. That by the time the timer goes off, this writing won’t be very dense in meaning. In fact, I think there will be many many errors. In grammar.

  13. I couldn’t step through it. My eyes widened in amazement. Here I was, standing on water, but it held me up. I thought of maybe trying to get in deeper, but the liquid wouldn’t budge. Was it the density? Was I lighter than it? Was it magic? What was this? I was suddenly afraid of this liquid, and most of all, I wanted to know where I was.

    just pour
    from your mouth.
    No thought
    behind them.

    to really be.

Dense is in the dictionary I’m positive, but I unfortunately do not have time to look it up at the moment. Maybe I will later, or not. Probably not though, but it is a pretty dumb word.

  28. Thick. Strong. Creamy, Soft, Hard. Dense is such an obscure phrase. It is one which I often hear used to describe a person short on braincells…but doesn’t dense mean something in plentiful supply? I suppose if you read into it too much you’d feel dense.

  39. Density is dense in itself.
The word accumulates in the internal memory of my brain.
Bringing density to life is bringing density to freedom,
Because when I write it’s not freedom I express,
it’s not words that I write,
    it’s not a voice that I release,

it’s the density of my mind.

  40. I find it difficult to understand that when insulting one’s intelligence the pejorative term “dense” is often used. This seems counter-intuitive, as a dense collection of neurons would increase one’s cognitive capacities to greater extents. Relatively speaking, of course.
