  5. The executive branch is one of the three branches of government in our United States. It is responsible for the administrative functions of governing, including running administrative agencies and managing much foreign policy, such as war. Because we have checks and balances, the executive branch is able to exercise some control over other branches but is in turn subject to controls by them. For example, the executive nominates members of the judicial branch, but these are subject to confirmation by the legislative branch. This is different from the role of the executive in countries governed by other systems. In parliamentary democracies, the executive is one member of the legislature; in authoritarian countries, the executive has unfettered power.
