That was me in the moonlight.
That girl with the starry eyes.
I met a boy in the garden
Held his hand under blackened skies.

He planted a rose behind my ear
and whispered, “I smell love in the air.”
“Don’t be silly,” I said.
“That’s the perfume in my hair.”

I awoke the next day
The rose was wilting in the sunlight.
I had forgotten to add water
It did not survive the night.

A fine romance is just… a notion. A black and white suit dancing in the rain, a top hat swirling in the air, a red rose kiss on offer. A boat afloat on a sea of flower petals. Made of delicate spun-sugar sentiments, a house of card wishes, hearts inflated like balloons. A many-splendoured thing.

Romance, a topic that eluded me. Romance, something that everybody contemplated, that everybody valued, that still remained a mystery to me. I saw couples of all sorts walk past me, dance, kiss, and I knew nothing of it.

I guess that’s what made me so bitter about the whole affair. Which was why it surprised me so much when romance struck a person like me.
