    His mother looked in from the kitchen. She and the boy’s father weren’t they only ones hurting she realized. Her son was being shunned too and the only friend he left was the loyal German Shepherd.

  6. The shepherd will lead the flock to better times, the promised land. Where the people don’t worry about who they are or who they should be. They can live and love and linger as they see fit. No one has to pretend to be anyone else. They live as they are.

  12. He forgot how easy it is to fall in and out of beliefs. He was raised to believe in God and Jesus and how he’ll lead you to heaven but then this happened. Losing someone always makes you forget about everything you hold sacred because suddenly it feels like nothing will ever feel right again

  32. Can you imagine leading sheep around all day? Sleeping in the mountains and fields, foraging and bringing with you only what you could carry in a bag over one shoulder. It would be very simple, and that’s what I want now. A simple life.

    I don’t read the psalms much any more. But I’ve always loved the imagery and music of this particular verse. It gives me a sense that I am not alone in my struggles. It calms. It allows me to look forward with hope.

  40. He shepherded a different kind of flock. The kind of flock with beady eyes and lolling tongues. Who wore headphones and neckties and horn-rimmed glasses. Screaming profanities and homophobic speech. And he smiled the whole time, holding onto his microphone, while the media praised him for his courage and daring tone.
