My parents were not home at the time and my grandparents were babysitting my brothers and me. We searched the yard for the perfect place to plant it. I watered it every day. Then my grandpa died of a heart attack. The tree was lost to me and even now, 5 years later, I can not locate where the tree had been. I can not see where the roots enter the ground creating the strong support for a long life. I can not find the bark that grows continually onward and upward.

I like to think he took it with him.

    And I’m fine with that.

I don’t know why it was such a big deal to me but I watched it grow, and I’d talk to it… check on it when I came home from school… I was so excited to see it get taller and taller. Taller than me even. I’m not sure if you could call it a tree. It looked more like a tall green branch. But it had maple leaves on it and it was growing out of the ground.

Then one day the gardener mowed it down.

  31. Aurora wakes up. She looks up. Rough bark undersides of branches. Velvety green leaves. Soft blue skies. She lays mostly still and turns her head. Shelter in the shade of a tree on an early summer morning. Blades of grass poke up for a huge stretch of land. At the place where some grass is dark green and some is light green, something pretty sprouts up. She waves her chubby hand and hits the stem of a dandelion.

She’s never seen or felt any of these things before. She doesn’t know what they do or what they’re called. She knows she’s called Aurora because the big people always say that when they talk to her, but she hasn’t figured out yet what she does.

Nevermind that for now. The dandelion stem feels good on her hand. She swats it again, watching the yellow petals jiggle as the corolla bobs to and fro against the backdrop of trees, grass and sky. Aurora giggles.
