  8. In my eyes she’s still eight, tawny-limbed and bright-eyed and she’s taunting me into playing hopscotch, even though that’s just not what boys do. So when she calls me I pick up, and let her voice plunge me back into the lake, summer break ‘97, when we first learned to start breaking all of each other’s rules. When she names the cafe I’m there five minutes early, running my fingertips all over the cracks and chips in the table. She arrives and I take her in, all the ruin of her, and make her over in my mind. A hairbrush through her hair. Wash her face. Change her clothes. Make her sleep for days. In my mind I press my mouth against hers, hoping to breathe a lifeline through her body. She tilts her wrists toward me and begs to stay the night; her eyes open wide like a doe’s. I’m drawing blood as I bite down on my tongue. I shake my head. I unfreeze my fingers and hand her the list I’ve composed, of rehabs and hotlines.

For only one was more than an ordinary glass bottle, for only one contained a substance much more than precious.
