The whole class immediately sat upright. The head teacher had come in supervise the class.

“So class, can anyone tell me what a significant factor was in Hitler’s rise to power?” said the teacher.

Melody raised her hand. The teacher was was wary, because Melody usually made some smart remark, but she was too late to stop her.

“Because the Doctor didn’t stop him,” Mels said, with a triumphant look on her face.

The teacher sighed and held her head in her hands.

It’s upright amazing how incredibly horrible people can make you feel about yourself. When you listen to every single word someone has to say but once you open your mouth to speak they so bluntly ignore every pathetic word that comes out of your stupid mouth, making you sit there and talk to yourself foolishly. It’s just amazing how ignorant and disgusting everyone can really be.

I am upright, if only in appearance. Even if, in reality, I have been torn in too many pieces to be called upright, but rather everywhere, like confetti in the wind, uncertain of where I shall be blown next, only knowing that it will be away from you, and that is better than towards you.

For the upteenth time that morning, Mark reached over and set his column upright. Why couldn’t it just stay put? He’d built it well enough; there shouldn’t be any reason for it to fall. What would Professor Elodian say to a column that couldn’t stand up straight, much less hold up a rooftop?

The chair no longer sat upright like it used to. Worn and tired, its legs now stuck out at odd angles. The table next to it, almost perfect and elegantly polished, served only as a reminder to the chair of all that it could not be, no matter how hard it tried.
