you put flowers in it. sometimes they break, and the water, if you bothered, spills out, and the flowers fall to the floor. but usually there's just flowers in it. They stand tall and strong. it happens to the best of us. You know how it is.

the vase stood at the end of the hallway as it always had. there was nothing particularly new or strange about it, it was just the vase that had been there as long as anyone could remember. but, although the vase had lived its whole life in the plain little house at the end of the hallway, no one had taken the time to notice the crack at its base.

the vase had too many sunflowers in it that the sunflowers started to fall out. no more could fit into the vase of sunflowers. to the extent that the stalks on the sunflowers were chafing green

So easily shattered
Just one slip
And it's done
A million pieces
No repair in site

She knew I hated that thing. It didn't go with the rest of our house. It was a jab from her to me. It screamed that she wasn't satisfied. With me, our house, our whole life.

My emotions could fit in that vase.
They wouldn't spill over, just calmly rest.
Contained.
Until the table loses balance.
Glass and emotions shattered across the floor.
I need a new vase.

The flowers were put into the vase on the front windowsill with the sun shining down on them. The vase was given to me by my mother. It was the last thing I received from her before she died, so as you can imagine, it means a lot to me.
