  1. The cities look small this high up the mountain. They’re mere dots of light scattered about a plane of darkness. There’s nothing of the excitement and the thrill of the night life. There’s only a steady hum of heavy silence, as if something is waiting, waiting, waiting at the borders for a chance to pounce.

  6. The cities were built before anybody really knew the symbolism to them. They grew before anybody understood what they were. They were brought into being by fools who thought they knew what they were doing. These cities were places of power that went beyond human knowledge. These were not the collection of people and buildings that most think of when they think of a city.

  8. We build these places for home, for comfort, for community. These are the densest places on Earth, yet for many of us there is great space. We find ourselves in ways unexpected and we share our lives with the multitudes.

  11. Cities are sprawling masses of buildings. I am but a small speck within a city. It is remarkable how they function, however. Who knew that such big places can come from such small beings?

  12. And we like cities dwell on a plain. Across acres of golden grain filled fields we abide. So close, yet so out of reach. Our cities keep us connected through written words, but prevent me from feeling your touch. I long to feel your slender fingers on the smooth skin on my neck. I yearn for your close embrace. But this distance is misery, and the closeness is taunting. I’m stuck in between near and far. Reaching out, I can’t grasp you. Oh if only these cities weren’t barely out of reach. Instead I gaze out the window towards your city across the golden waves of grain. Your hazel eyes and bright smile fill my imagination, and I’ll just keep dreaming. Don’t ever wake me from this sleep, oh accursed cities.

  13. Back light, dim cities drowned in low set smoke, billowing from the chimneys we preach to hate, but consume from. Thousands of cars passing, passing, moving and never stopping for the city lights. The darkness it takes, from souls, turning hearts black.

  15. Lights that glisten from the distance like stars, tiny dots creating constellations. Secret corners hidden within busy, crowded streets. The feeling of infinity.

  16. The lights of this city are probably more beautiful that that of any of the cities I’ve visited in my short life. I could sit out in this ledge for hours and stare. With a boy, a girl, or just a good book.

  19. Cities are dirty. They are full of smoke and garbage and exhaust. And people. So many people. They are full of crime and hate. Cities are ugly. But they are also full of love, and that makes them somehow beautiful.

  20. above rooftops and alleyways
    and chimneys and umbrellas

are the faces of windy days
    and tv lights

faces turned upward and down –
    anything but forward

    faces that govern
those tense and fickle toes –
    weary of commitment
    the tickle of grass, foreign
    the heartless pulse of concrete,

    all too familiar

  21. The smog filled air smothered the city, clogging the lungs of the people who lived there, getting into the wash hanging on the lines, into the food being brought in from the country. It was dirty, and yet so full of life. People screaming at each other from open windows across the street, children running anywhere they pleased, and me, standing there, taking it all in.

  24. The tale of two cities is the name of a book I’ve never read. The tale I imagine is the story of how each town has two layers. The one most people see and believe, and the one only the aware can detect lurking beneath the surface.

  26. Cities. What is it about them that draw the untold millions to and from them each day? Does it have to do with the unknown, that thing that causes so much curiosity that we must quench it by visiting? Cities are people’s homes, jobs, businesses, games, museums, loves, enemies, and lives. They are everything.

  31. There are seven lords who rule seven cities in the country of Alikahtolm. As rulers over us, they are vicious and cruel. Nothing seems to be able to penetrate their forces, so it is with a fading hope we continue to march on through our day. Hoping -no praying -for a deliver to save us.
We have not heard in four hundred years. Many of us have lost the remnant of hope that we possessed.
