  16. I’d always felt disconnected. In a school full of peers, a room full of friends, a house full of people, I felt completely alone. Part of it was my fault, I’ll admit, but another part had nothing to do with me. It was the people around me, who put me down and held me back from the crowd, who warned me to always keep one foot out the door. And then I met one person, and without meaning to, I stepped inside and closed the door behind me. The first time I ever had. I was terrified, but I stayed. I stayed with him because for the first time in my life, I felt like I was connected to another human being. And today at lunch, sitting with people who make me laugh and smile, people I feel I can connect to, I was able to look across the group at him, and silently thank him for unknowingly catching me when I was about to fall.

  17. There’s this thing. Really it’s more like the Thing. It stands and it waits. Skulks in the shadows of every room, down every alley. Anyway, the Thing, he stays there and he plants himself firmly for hours. It is he we have to thank for being connected.

  19. being connected. what a weird concept these days, right? it is so hard for us to feel connected to people anymore without technology and yet what people dont see is that just being human beings makes us all connected. i always think of the conflict between the sayings that “the world is so small” and “the world is so large and full of opportunities.” i believe that the world is a huge place full of opportunities and people to meet, but there is a special bond, a special connection, that makes us human beings a single unit. we are all diverse, that is true, but we are one of the same. paradox anyone?
