  1. A darkroom is a place where you go to develop pictures, so I hear. I have never been in one of these before and I don’t plan on it. I take pictures on cameras that you print off the computer.

  2. Darkrooms are not in common use nowadays because of the advent of digital photography, but photos developed in darkrooms can have a special look reminiscent of the past. This is how sepia and grayscale photos get their uncommon colors.

  5. I was once alone in a dark room. No one around. Just me. I had nothing with me. Just me myself, and my thoughts. I couldn’t bear the silence. I wanted to scream. Nothing was happening. Everything blank and empty. I needed to get out. Why would someone be trapped here? Why am I here? Thats all I reall want to know.

  8. It’s dark. It’s cold. There’s a quiet wind breathing, as if some large being is hidden in the shadows. No light. So deep the walls could be right here or miles away, on another continent. If you reach out your hand you grasp air. Something crawls over your foot. Is it just the air-conditioning, or the tentacle of a giant squid?

  9. Dark rooms are creepy. I feel like I am being stalked when I’m all alone. I feel like something is going to come out of the shadows and attack me. They’re trippy! But if I’m with someone else, I’m okay with them. (:

  13. At NSHS I spend most of my time in the darkroom. Among my friends, the unofficial photo kids, the photo room has sort of dictated my high school career. Hipsters, Silver Keys, chemicals, a crazy teacher–the darkroom represents more than just a classroom to me; it’s my artsy friends’ mecca.

  16. The darkroom was filled with that eerie red glow, that always made me feel as though I was stained with blood. I loved taking pictures, but I always and forever would dread the time I spent in the darkroom. I didn’t understand how people could enjoy that? The thought of being trapped in this room, with no lights and hundreds of dangerous chemicals? It just seemed like a horror story waiting to happen, at least to me.

  17. Processing images in a darkroom is long gone for the most part. The digital era is great in a lot of ways but it makes me sad because I love vintage.

  24. In the darkroom it is dark as the absence of light
    from the vacuum of space.
It sort of puts you in your place
    What a waste.

  31. The light burns my eyes when I exit. I hate these places. I love what comes out of it, but this reemergence always unsettles me. I feel like Plato’s cave analogy has come to life. Just me in this damn room looking at flat images. Why the hell am i so damn sure I am the real one

  32. I don’t know mUch about photography- but this word being part of the development process. I love other “dark rooms” when I’m trying to sleep on the other hand! It’s probably a good thing I’m not developing film… As I’d likely fall asleep!

    by Jenn on 02.02.2011
  33. Darkroom? That was yesterday’s word! What are you doing to me here? I come for a break from the monotony of the day, trying to get the creative juices flowing, and you give me the same word from yesterday? What a let down.

  34. A place to develop pictures, right? But it’s so much more than that. It’s like a hidden cave where the only thing you can see is this faint red light from somewhere in the distance. If you find another source of light, everything you have been working towards to get there will disintegrate. So you have to make due with the reddish hue, that oddly warms you right down to your socks.

  38. All I’ve got are these photographs. Shutter. Bugs crawling under my skin in a darkroom. The chair spins around and her head falls back. Her mouth opens, beetles fly out. Yuck. Room dark. Room darkening shades. Darkroom sounds so ominous. The name of my castle? Darkroom. Of course.

  39. She stood alone in the darkroom
the undeveloped photos in her hand
she dropped them on the floor
    they melted into sand
she let her feet sink in
the moon shone on her face
    the memories were gone
but the pain was there to stay

  40. When i hear the word darkroom, it reminds me of a room that’s dark. That isn’t really what it is, it’s actually a room in which they produce film in.
