  1. lock the door, lock it tight. Don’t forget to shut off the light. We must not let anyone in tonight! We certainly don’t want to wake up with a fright!

  2. The sun shone brightly, illuminating the world and the souls upon it, a gentle breeze and idyllic scenery meaning this cabin was close to paradise… despite all the horror films and the scaremongers tales of murder and rape, the deadbolt on this beauty had seized open from inactivity, remote and content as it was.

  3. left me out. i came back to get my things, but she had put a deadbolt on the door, to keep me out. i’ll never know what i had done… if it had been loving her too much until she could not take it or not remembering that she didn’t love me. but all i did was love her, and that was a good thing. but this deadbolt, she used it and with it she left me out. that last tuesday – the one where we had a lazy sunday and she called in sick for work and so did i – when i told her loved her – that’s gone now. locked in behind a deadbolt, and i am out.

  4. it’s on a door, you need a key to unlock it. makes me think of the one on the old house’s door with the noise making string thing…and the door to my bedroom at my apartment in the fall cuz it’ll have one on it, which is nerve wrecking cuz i lose keys all the time like last nite when i locked it in the car again

  7. deadbolt, cold metal, splinters reaching out like the fingers of some burnt skeleton, the bolt holds teh door locked but it’s a tentative hold, and the whole thing will be bypassed with but a firm shoulder and a real purpose. The metal is black and my fingers share in the cool smell.

  11. Deadbolt.

I see it, I see the door, I hear the sound.

I picture a woman behind that door. A man locking it. The bolt clicking into place. The lock. Unopenable. Used for security, to keep people out. So who was the woman in the closet/room he’s locking in?

Maybe it would be better if the lock were on her side… and there was a secret passage to get her out. A passageway in the stone room. And the deadbolted door, once locked, the outside won’t see.

  14. i’ve never really thought about deadbolts before. what do they do? keep people out? keep people in? but what’s the purpose of that. why are we so afraid of others? these locks are so tough, you can tell by the name. dead. bolt. it’s a little scary that we need those in the world today.

  23. Some families feel the need to deadbolt their front door. My family has never done such a thing because we trust people too much. Is a deadbolt too little trust though? Probably. We also have a back door that sort of locks. Anyone could get into our house if they really really wanted to. Maybe that’s dumb, but we’ve never had a break in the entire 24 years we’ve lived here.

  25. when the lock was living, the door was never even closed. it had no need to be. and so, we could bolt in an out as we pleased, like children playing an infinite game of hide and seek despite the adult’s warning not to run in the house. but now that we are dead, the doors are closed, locked shut, and only the silent echoes of our laughter slips through the keyhole.

I hear her footsteps. She is approaching my door, ready to swing it open. I can almost see her, pushing with her arm, and then walking right into the unmoved (and undamaged) door. Wham! Haha! Success!
