  4. It was always on Tuesday afternoons that my mother would iron in front of the afternoon movie. Shirts that were stiff and smelled of sunshine and warm summer breezes, teatowels, softened with the heat and steam of the black iron. Cuffs and collars had been dipped in blue starch and stored in the regfrigerator until it was time to iron them to a crisp, crackling edge. Ironing meant that Mum was in the livingroom all afternoon with me. She was never distracted by other chores and could spend two hours, watching black and white movies, and ironing the cottons and linens of our daily lives.

I know you can’t be as strong as I need you to be.
As strong as I wish you were.
Because I’m not that strong, and we both know I’m tougher than you’ll ever be.

  20. The rain drops were pattering on my pink umbrella, as I rushed home. I kicked the gate open trying not to get soaked. The rusty iron gate clanged shut behind me. As I fumbled with the old, yellowed keys in my hand, I heard the familiar rumbling sound of a motorcycle coming to a halt. The rusty iron gate creaked open behind me. I looked back, startled. And smiled stupidly when I saw the postman’s face.
How crazy of me to think it could have been you!
What I would give to go back in time and see you walk in through that rusty old gate…

  21. Iron. Metal. An element in the Periodical Table that we all learn about in high school. I still remember the stupid little experiments that involved dissolving iron in acid back in Honors Chemistry. No wonder I got a “C” in that class, because not only was it first period, but it was a pain in the ass. Stupidest subject ever.

  22. Ron , on , no, nor. To iron or not to iron- why waste time ironing ? Why when science has advanced to produce clothes which do not require ironing . The sheer physical effort of ironing huge amounts of linen which will still will not look good is surely wasted effort. But one could have certain philosophical questions ready to preamble while ironing if one gets used to the iffort and one has the best equipment . Iron and think , do not iron and you are a tinker . So lets get happy and be an ironing thinker . So go on , after ironing twenty shirts you are wearing a hair shirt yourself . Definitions of iron – Ron who is angry, to make Ron angry , angry on what occasions ?on the occasiions that you engage in this outmoded labour.

  28. The house at the bottom of the hill looks out over the ancient abbey ruins. There are five carefully surgeried scots pines along the length of the garden inhabited by an extended family of rooks, so tall are they now that sunlight floods in under it to warm and illuminate the windows. Who had enough money here to build a house in the nineteen thirties? The style of the times is preserved, small pane windows and long low lines. There is a wonderful wrought iron gate, the work of an artisan blacksmith, hanging a bit askew, flaking brown paint, brown like the door and the trim of the house, poor house deprived of vibrant colour, watching over the abbey , watching when the Black Nun walks at full moon and breathing the salted sea wind blasting up when the wind goes into the north west.

  29. “‘Strike while the iron is hot.’ Have you ever wondered what that actually means,” Judy asked. Dave wisely remained silent. The last time he’d tried to answer one of these philosophical questions, it had been about, “Never put off tomorrow what you can do today,” and he’d ended up spending his Sunday cleaning out the garage. “Does it mean that you should forge the sword while the iron is till malleable or does mean it that you should get all the ironing done before the iron cools?” She continued as she paced the room excitedly. “Or maybe, it just means that I should go on strike and never do any ironing at all.”
