    twenty-somethings
    looking for a way
    to stand out

    at a drunken sorority mixer.

  9. The boss. I guess. I don’t have a job, but it’s cool, ’cause I’m fifteen and I don’t need a job yet. I’d rather there be opportunities for people that need jobs in Calvert County than me having a job. I live with my dad, and he pays for everything.

  13. is the person who bosses you around and tells you what to do at every second. Managers are annoying and whiney. Sometimes I’ve had good managers whom I’ve liked, but most of the time they just bug me. Ive never been a manager and I don’t plan to ever become one. I am the manager of me. That’s my plan and I’m sticking to it.

  14. I wish I had one. In this economy it seems like they’re only hiring managers. If I had a few years of experience maybe I could be one. The irony is terrible. I can’t be a manager without having experience and I can’t have experience without being a manager. Devilish.

  15. The manager strut through the store, scolding employees. When he arrived in aisle 11, he found the woman who had asked to see him. “Oh, good you’re here, it’s about time.” She looked at him skeptically. “I couldn’t find my favorite brand of olive oil, and when I asked one of your employees, he scuffed and said keep looking.”

  16. I manage my own life. At least that’s what I thought. Nothing goes right. I have no control over anything. What kind of manager is that? I’m supposed to manage my own life. But I’m not. Who is managing my life then?

  17. his nametag pinned on a ketchup red shirt,
    crooked.
tousled mop of mousey brown hair
    sleepy green eyes
shoulders that slouch as he rings up
    a little old lady,
two dollars and eighty eight cents,
    mouth that stretches wide in an earth-shattering yawn;
he doesn’t have to tell me to mop aisles two and four
    (i’ve already done that
and shelved aisles three through nine)
but i wish he’d tell me
he likes the way i put my hair up for him
    this early-morning sunday shift.

The manager had been restocking the shelves, whistling as she went. The manager hadn’t noticed the new market.

  19. Everything about the manager was pathetic. His stooped shoulders, shuffling feet, and limp greasy hair all contributed to the nobody that he was. He new that no matter what happened, he could never escape the world he was living in now; a lonely world with no future or chance at success.

  34. Manager is someone who is always associated with having a boring job, sitting behind a desk, poking into other employees business, looking down on people, etc. But this is an illusion, mainly because of movies and books.

  37. Who’s managing your life? It’s easy to say that you’re the one managing and in control of your life but it’s hard to admit that you’re so easily influenced by everything. You’re influenced so much that over time, though you may not realize, you aren’t managing anything. You aren’t in control of anything, you’ve just become another product of society. Conforming to whatever society tells you too, believing in whatever society wants you too, and doing whatever society deems acceptable. And it’s weird because you were always the one yelling about how you’d never conform to social norms but in the end you’ve become just like everyone else. Another clone. So now think about it and ask yourself ‘Who’s managing my life?’

  38. Managers are usually thought of as rude, arrogant people that would like to control the world. Did you know that McDonalds has, like, 10 mangers for every location? Therefore, it is highly unlikely that all of those people are terrible.

  39. She walked into the store and was hit with a cold blast. There wasn’t another place like this. Shyly, she moved to a display, peeking around from behind her bangs. The brunette came here every day for one reason and one reason only. Would anyone figure it out? Judging by the looks they had. But the manager was off today.

  40. There are lots of managers in the workplace. A manager of Mcdonald’s, a manager over a department store, a manger over a big TV station. Yeah. The type of manager I want to be? A Mcdonald’s manager. Haha just kidding. Actually, they do get payed quite a bit… Interesting little fact for ya!
