  1. He was the staple of the family. The clown, the referee, the storyteller, the teacher, and shoulder to cry on. And now he’s gone, leaving us with the feel of his scraggily beard and flannel shirts, to find people he thinks are worth more than we are.

  9. staple is the last name of a dear friend of mine. Her name is ashlyn and i have known her since i was five. her mother died when she was young, and i know that this has had a huge impact on her life. growing up without a mother would be devastating because i know personally my mother is the centre of my whole universe and i cannot imagine my life without her. Everyday ashlyn must overcome challenges and figure out how to do things all on her own. my mother helps me with these obstacles, but ashlyn has no one to help her. she must rely on herself.

I had been so inconsistent and scattered when it came to the quality of my work that I didn’t even know how well I could write any longer- and that scared me. I was losing the essence of who I was in the chaos of high school. I stapled my paper, shoved it in my red folder, jammed the keys in the car, and skidded off, already 7 minutes late.

  16. Just give me one good reason to stay here, to keep clinging like a staple with the corner bent. I don’t want to embarrass me, I know you’d hate it even more if I embarrassed you, so give me one good reason to stay. Say anything, say one word, tell me that it’s not just me, that it’s you, that you’re the pressure holding me in, keeping my guts from tumbling to the floor like a pile of loose papers.
