She looked at the pills in her hand before tossing them nonchalantly into her mouth. Everyday, the doctor said, and then eventually she would begin to feel the effects. Her energy would return, the daylight would creep back in. But she couldn't help wondering....can I do this on my own?
As is customary in dreams, I was unable to lift my eyes. I just heard the pacing back and forth of what I was sure was a four-legged animal. Finally, my consciousness changed positions and I could see up into the loft. It was unmistakably an African Lion with his eyes trained on me, watching for any sudden movement to spring. Moments later, as I stood frozen from fear, the lion's jaws opened, wider and wider, until I was sure they would snap apart.
As I watched her pick up my little brother's toys, I tried to imagine what her life was like before she came to America and became employed by my father. Did she have family that she left behind in whatever country she'd come from? Was she alone in the world, and that's why she chose to live with a substitute family, acting as a surrogate mother to me? I had so many things I wanted to ask her, but the time was never right.
The jolt was unbelievably sudden. Alone in back seat, he saw his two friends be jerked forward and all he could think was how grateful he was they had their seat belts on...but sometimes they contributed to worse injury. Once the car had finally hit the pole on the passenger side, he heard his friends' screams die out, replaced by groans...and then they finally were still.
As her fingers shaped the ceramic, she thought who she might give this piece to. Her last piece to be made as a university student of art. Traditionally, it should have gone to her mother, grandmother, someone close who financially supported her when she chose to spend four years studying such an abstract thing.
