Chad had never felt this emotion before. Not at this level. It shamed him to admit it now, especially since he’d lost his mother seven years before. Why was it his father’s death hit him harder than his mother’s had? Or was it simply that his mother had died in a hospital, surrounded by machines and nurses to act as a buffer, while the only one helping Chad wipe the blood spattering from their father’s lips was his little sister. Yes, dark and endless beneath the numbness and panic, he was devastated. Pretty appropriate start for the apocalypse.
